Commercial Description:
Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Our Angel’s Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak. The beer is available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations.

2008 ABV: 12.5%, gold lettering, 750ml and 375ml, with 2008 on label
2007 ABV: 11.5%, gold lettering, 750ml only

Dark brown color, tan head. Sweet, chocolate and oak scent. Sweet, raissin taste. Warming alcohol. Medium to full mouthfeel, medium bitterness.

RBESG08 grand tasting.
Poured a dark red brown body with a small tan head. Pungent yoghurty malty nose, notes of smoke and whiskey. Complex malty taste. Coffee, yoghurt, alcohol (whiskey?). Still, not the best beer I’ve ever had.

4 oz taste at the Seattle IBF. Something special, for sure. Pours a deep, dark cola brown with a thick, dense head. First impression on the aroma was roasty sweet malts, with notes of brandy, oak, deep malts and just enough hops to counter the depth of the brew. Taste is like a fine blend of a Belgian quad / brown ale (think SB Abt. 12 meets Nostradamus), with prominent notes of chocolate, brandy, dark fruits (figs, dates), a bit of smoke (perhaps going as far as coffee), caramel and cloves. More than anything, I noticed how my mouth kept salivating with each sip - it coated thoroughly and left me wanting more. Heavily carbonated, and a decent alcohol burn (our bottle was labeled 12.5%). By far the best Lost Abbey effort I’ve tasted, and I feel lucky to have been able to try it. Wonderful stuff.

Sampled at the RSBEG08 grand tasting. Murky brown with medium beige head. Very complex malt aroma with vanilla and coconut, dark fruits, and some warming alcohol. Medium bodied and very smooth, almost chewy. Very well balanced. A truly great beer.

Thanks Tomme. This beer is on fire. Tomme was right. It explodes with a fuming gasp and doesn’t let up til the cows come home. Theres all kinds of stuff caught up in the froth. Looks like chocolate chips. This beer rules. Aromas are mild yet revealing of it’s confidence. If I can just get this head to settle I could drink the darn thing. Medium to full nectar and well carbonated. Gets a little bubbly on the tongue. Moderately sweet with define bourbonesque flavors. This brew is sublimely well balanced. Flavors of nectarine, plumb, grapes, melon, caramel, creamed coffee, marshmallow, and stewed pineapple. The finish is refined and mildly sweetened exposing French toast. Overall: this brew is balanced and well defined in it’s genre. This brew gets my TRUMP card.

Thank you both!!
(2006 rating): Dark black brown with slightly white ivory head that is fairly short lived. Smell is thick nice figs, fruit, raisins and malt. Flavor is enjoyable caramel malt, figs and balanced very well. Overall, the thickness, smell and flavor work together very nicely.

This beer did not meet my expectations. It was extremely hot, and while smooth for what is was, it was a bit sweet, with tones of prunes, raisins and honey, big alcohol, which unfortunately was a flavor played out many, many moons ago. Again, I expect a lot more from Tomme, and this was subpar IMHO.
