DenverLogan (421), MileHi, Colorado, USA Jan 24, 2008 Ruby brown; tan head. Rich malt and coconut aroma...more coconut in the first batch. I’ve had this many times including at the 06’ Toronado Barleywine fest where it won an award. Flavors of rich amber malts, vanilla, oak, bourbon, maple syrup, caramel. Quite tasty, smooth and lovely, with the first batch perhaps a tad more special. Rich and lovely, fresh or aged, in bottle or on tap. cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA Jan 23, 2008 2007 750 ml bottle via trade with wetherel - Pours a hazy brown color with a faint off white head. No lacing to mention. Aroma is oak/bourbon, dark esters, molasses, and vanilla. Flavor is sweet malt, dark esters, and vanilla. Medium to full body. I think what sticks out the most about this beer besides the fantastic aroma and flavor, is that it is SO smooth for a relatively young beer. A fantastic beer. Thanks John. axilla (962), New Providence, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 22, 2008 Updated: Feb 6, 2008Courtesy of JimboWood. Poured a cloudy dark brown with a foamy, tan head. The aroma is big dark fruits with toffee, toasted and roasted malts, chocolate, and bourbon. Flavors are sweet carmel, big cinnamon and brown sugar, choclate, vanilla, raisins, plums, with some bitter hops and bourbon coming through in the finish. Surprisingly smooth. Bockyhorsey (2486), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jan 21, 2008 Bottle courtesy of cbkshubert. Good aroma of oak wood and bourbon whiskey. Dark body with tan head. Sweet tobacco, whiskey, wood with only a slight bitterness noticable. Alcohol on the fish found in bottom of glass was not a factor till last swig. Good beer that lives up to the hype. BeerandBlues2 (3201), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Jan 15, 2008 8th Big Beers, Belgians, and Barleywines. Pours clear brown with a spare, fizzy, off-white head, diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, toffee, nutty), average hops (flowers, perfume), average yeast (dough, earth) with notes of heavy alcohol, dates, and vanilla. Full bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness. Aroma of dark fruits, oak, and warming alcohol. The initial flavor is mildly sweet. Notes of raisins, vanilla, and oak chips. Strong, bitter finish. Warming alcohol was present from start to finish. blankboy (3156), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 11, 2008 Rating 2100! Bottle (750ml) at beerbistro, shared with and courtesy of a very generous HogTownHarry. Batch 1, 2006 vintage. A milestone and a much anticipated beer, I’m one happy camper! Pours a very dark ruby-brown with a small diminishing creamy tan head, almost oily-looking. Very nice rich aroma of dark fruit, vanilla, wood, caramel malt, alcohol, light spices, hops and more -- there’s lots going on there, it’s quite complex. Flavour: Wow, that’s everything it’s purported to be -- amazing! Where’s the 11.5% alcohol? Sweet taste of caramel malt, brown sugar, vanilla, dark fruit and some hops and alcohol in the finish. Can’t taste much alcohol but this will knock you on your ass for sure, I can definitely feel it. Nice full body, syrupy mouthfeel. Amazing, quite simply the best barrel-aged beer I’ve ever had. Thanks again Harry -- I’m aging the 2007 version for at least year and then we’ll share that sucker and I hope it’s even close to as good as this was. Wow. chef201atc (249), Weatherford, Texas, USA Jan 11, 2008 Red-tinted caramel colored pour with a scant head. Fruity nose with hints of some dark fruits. Mouthfeel is smooth. Flavor is to bitter – of maybe it’s just very hot – for a barley wine IMO.
