carruthm (1110), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 13, 2009 2008 version, bomber bottle. Pours a dark deep brown with little head. Aroma really hit up as it warmed over time. Lots of sweet notes, dates, plums, vanilla and currants. Flavor was a bit more muted, but still sweet. richlikebeer (823), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 13, 2009 been drinking quite a few barley wines lately...BAON and BAOS in the month, so my expectations for this beer were pretty high, and I would be lying if i didnt say i was seriously let down...pour was deep cloudy brown with not a speck of carbonation...it didnt make a sound when we pulled the cork and there was absolutely zero head on the glass. color was nice, and the nose was brandy and oaky. flavors were nice...caramel, fig, brandy, wood but a bit of abv in there as well. the body was sweet and smooth, but again, the alcohol snuck in at the end. dont get me wrong, this was a good beer, and I think with some time it may season well, but the total flatness was a bit shocking, and the abv needs to cool before it is "great" in my book. Fin (3376), Merton, Oxfordshire, England Aug 13, 2009 Bottle that Craig brought along to Fin and Craigs pre Cropredy Festival mini tasting at Merton, Oxon 12-08-09 Pours dark brown with not much of a head. Aroma is sweet dark sugars with a strange cheesiness going on also. In fact it really is a touch cheesy feet and rather strange not desperately off-putting as there is dark malts and some oak and whiffs of alcohol as well but not the aroma I was expecting. Tastes better than the aroma is suggesting, warmth from the alcohol is immediately apparent, its sticky, sweet with lots of dark sugars. Some oak, caramel and then the alcohol shows again its fine but the cheesiness and slight concern as to whether this is at its best concern me a little . A4 A3 F6 P3 Ov11 2.7 boamr (112), Pennsylvania, USA Aug 12, 2009 Bottle from 08. Pours dark brown with no head or carbination to it. Has a heavy smell of brandy with some wood in it as well. Taste is of brandy, wood, vanilla, and caramel. Can taste the alcohol in it but it’s not to bad. Be great in a few years but shouldn’t rate over BA Old Numbskull. vtafro (452), , New Jersey, USA Aug 11, 2009 Updated: Oct 29, 20092008 Bottle. Well it doesn’t bother me as much as some people but the carbonation was lacking. This beer would be tremendous if this wasn’t lacking. Flavor is big and full bodied, brandy, oak, licorice, chocolate and does meld pretty well. Only wish we started the night with this. 12 percent goes down to easy. 3.9
Was A little nice on draft, which did have some carbonation, but for a twelve percent barley wine you don’t need much. 4.1 thirdeye11 (403), Texas, USA Aug 9, 2009 (375ml cork and caged 2008 bottle thanks to rollinhard) Pours a brown amber, no carbonation whatsoever. Nose is spicy, alcoholic, chocolate, burnt toast. Taste is chocolate, hot alcohol, bitter hop on the taste and finish. An odd toasted linger. This would probably be awesome if it had carbonation, but since it isn’t, it’s not. hezron (600), Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA Aug 7, 2009 Aroma of fermented cherries, vanilla, oak, dried fruit, alcohol, cheese cave, caramel. Color of grade b dark amber maple syrup with a thin light tan head that fades. Sweet, with a touch of crisp tartness mid-palate balanced with oaked caramel, dried fruit, vanilla tannin. Mediumed bodied, buttery texture and a residual dryness. Lingering finish. porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Aug 7, 2009 (375 ml bottle (2008) via trade with WeeHeavySD, thanks Jon!) Hot, sweet and flat as a pancake...Cork comes out with barely a pop. Pours murky dark brown with a slight amber hue. Only hint of a head is a slight ring around the edges. Appears flat. Aroma of raisin, brandy, wood and caramel. Palate is flat, thin and lifeless. The beer has pretty much collapsed on itself with just a shell left. Flavor is a complete mess with the lack of any body to support it. Lots of alcohol with some sweet, sticky remnants of brandy, wood, raisin and candy. Hard to rate a beer in this condition. Bummer. I loved the bourbon barrel version.
