SudsMcDuff (1691), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA Jul 10, 2009 2008 750ml bottle.. drank on july 10th 2009 @ 6:15pm::::: Very light tiny pop, pours a jet black with maybe 50 small brown bubbles on a vigorous pour, headring disappears after a minute or two .. . . smell is wonderful, from clean dark fruits, to candied brandy, and all the smells of your childhood (if your parents were lushes) ... . mouthfeel of water, no carbonation, like drinking a pussy version of SA Triple bock, but its actually very easy to drink, unlike the 3x bock .. .. quite a lot of heat comes through, but for 12% not that bad .. . . even a light touch of carbonation would have been nice .. . flavours of oak, smoke, tar, chocolate plums, cherry brandy ... . you’re like a bone with a bone ... I can see why people got pissed about this brew, god! the potential this beer has to be great and the way Lost Abbey went about it is unexcuseable, money grubbers! but that being said, a nice brew but all and all: a disappointment ... . ya i said bump uglies, so what you wanna fight about it!?! .. . . It will take ALOT for me to buy Lost Abbey beer again, thanks Tomme, i hope you enjoy my $32 ... you’re a fuckin crook ... honestly: i did kinda enjoy this beer in a weird way, but basically it is a mess.... this would sell better if offered in a scotch/jager like bottle and drank like an aperitif, garbage sold as a beer!! Sherry aroma. Small beige head. Dark coloured and very strong in alcohol. Smooth on the palate with a slightly dry whisky finish. Slipstream (734), USA Jul 8, 2009 Thanks to Adrian for opening up this classic! So this is a barrel aged barley wine? I thought it was a stout. Pours flat and reddish brown. Strong scent of fruit, brandy, cherries, and alcohol. Nice label. It is flat, like a cask ale, but that does not stop a fine brew, i.m.o. Delicious flavor of cherry, brandy, chocolate, dates, and prunes. Very fruity up front, with hops drying things off in an almost menthol-like finish. This would be a great choice for an after dinner treat, like a fine liqueur, only better. Expensive, but rich, sweet, and superb. CapnJazz (35), Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 7, 2009 25oz Bottle shared with Zach and Dave. Aroma upon popping th ecork was great. Figs, raisins, toffee, and a certain elegance. Wel, it’s flat, big surprise, just absolutely still in the glass. The flavors are big and bold, quite good actually, pretty boozy, rich, and luxurious. But I can’t get past how dead this thing is. Nice try. Could be great with some carbonation. Rotorhead87 (117), Temple, Texas, USA Jul 4, 2009 This is a fantastic beer, period. It has zero head and little carbonation and you know what? It doesn’t matter.
It pours a dark, murky brown with zero head. The aroma is a complex blend of chocolate, vanilla and some fruit. The taste is similar, too complex for me to describe adequately. There is a bit of alcohol in th finish, but in my opinion it adds to the flavors. milljam (562), Norman, Oklahoma, USA Jul 3, 2009 500!!!! Well, everyone has been partially right on the flatness. It does detract somewhat from the beer, although considering how potent/complex this one is, all is not lost. Most complex barley wine aroma I’ve ever had....dark chocolate, whiskey, oak, anise, fig, plum, vanilla...in a sense very port-like. The aroma is better as the beer warms...indeed it seems at its best when the beer is room temperature. Flavor is just as complex, with everything mentioned in the aroma coming out on the palate. Again, gets better as it warms. In the end, there are only two issues with the beer: one is the alcoholic bite, which can be taken care of with some cellaring; the other is the carbonation, which results in a thin, watery mouthfeel. I think with better carbonation this would be a great barley wine, instead of just a pretty good one. Hudspart (371), Hudsonville, Michigan, USA Jul 2, 2009 I don’t get this beer at all (or maybe barley wines in general). 2008 vintage. Flat as water. Strong aroma and flavor of alcohol. Just awful. joeneugs (282), Livermore, California, USA Jun 29, 2009 I’ve been looking forward to popping the cork on this one for a while. I was a little nervous about the buzz over the flatness of it, since I usually don’t like flat beers, but in my mind, it totally overcame that. It pours a dark muddy brown with loads of sediment. Of course no head to speak of. The aroma was special. Chocolate covered cherries, wood, vanilla, anise, kalua. The taste had a little carbonation, but not much. Very thick with a strong bourbon like flavor of oak and vanilla. What I liked was that every sip yielded a different flavor. Thats the sign of a top notch beer. Caramel, toffee, licorice, maple syrup, molasses... I could go on and on. Big alcoholic burn with a slight bitterness in the finish. Overall- a great beer, but only in smallish samples due to its massiveness. More carbonation would have been nice too.
