Commercial Description:
Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Our Angel’s Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak. The beer is available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations.

2008 ABV: 12.5%, gold lettering, 750ml and 375ml, with 2008 on label
2007 ABV: 11.5%, gold lettering, 750ml only
2006 ABV: 10.5%, black lettering, 750ml only

2007 bottle sampled on 12/15/07: Pours a transparent copper bronze with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Aroma of rich, sweet caramel malts and oaky brandy warmth along with some brown sugar. Body could hide the alcohol a little better, but this should age well.

Bottle sampled at the Port Brewing on 12/2/06: Pours a dark mahogany with ruby hues and a dense, frothy dark tan head. Complex sweet dark caramel and oaky brandy aroma has a touch of raisiny notes. Body starts sweet and dark caramely with a good amount of brown sugar and earthy sweet oak. Has a well-balanced, slightly warming finish. A nice beer that should age really well.

Aroma is full on bourbon, peat, scotch and of course, some alcohol notes, deep auburn, tiny tan head, oily at the sides of the glass. Flavour is a majestic malt, (caramelized) which reminds me of the top layer of creme brulee, alcohol is also noted, but appreciated. Full bodied, very bold, bitter, a beautiful night cap beer. Sensational! Thanks for sharing Dave Steen!!

Bottled. Vintage 2008. Dark brown reddish colour. Almost no head, but what I can see is quite fluffy and light brown. Aroma of spice, caramel, berries, light sourness, oak, Flavour is a bit citric, full of berries, spice, has a tad of fruits and a light touch of caramel. Meidum to full bodied. Dry spicy and fruity end. Has a alcohol touch on lips and palate. Very very nice in my book. A bit flat, but still great beer.

Bottle courtesy of LooseCannon at Immy’s Backyard Throwdown. 2008 vintage - corked and caged. Pours an opaque dark brown with ruby tinges throughout. Short tan head. Aroma is caramel, brown sugar, sweet malts, vanilla, and dark fruit. Taste is oak, vanilla, soft alcohol, chocolate, cherries, caramel, and molasses. Some brown sugar here as well and soft brandy notes. Body is warming and alcoholic with a slickness about it and subtle carbonation. Ends with more dark fruit, light spice, caramel, vanilla, molasses, alcohol and oak. Very tasty and one of the best of the day.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a slight haze under a collapsing brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of whiskey, chocolate, and vanilla - nice. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of vanilla, chocolate, and wood, as well as light notes of the alcohol. Nice one.

Tasted on tap at the 2007 Bistro West Coast Barrel Aged Beer Festival. This Barley wine poured a deep amber color. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is malt, caramel, dark fruit, chocolate and brandy. Med to full bodied barley wine. Malts are caramel and toffee. Touch of oak and vanilla. Very smooth, but this one still has a touch of an edge to it. Nice balance of oak and caramel. Very complex beer. Contrasted nicely with the 2007 version at the fest as well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
