COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Our Angel’s Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak. The beer is available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations.

2010 ABV: 11.5% 375ml Bottling stamp on neck says 2010 but was released in Jan 2011. It is called the 2011 Angels Share Brandy.
2009 ABV: 11.5%, 375 mL
2008 ABV: 12.5%, gold lettering, 750ml and 375ml, with 2008 on label

2008 bottle from WeeheavySD. Pours a murky plum color with no discernable head, as warned. Smells very similar to port, with prominant notes of raisin and vanilla. Cavernous in flavor. Tastes of plums, dates, powered cocoa, malt, wood chips, and brown sugar. Seems to leave a resin on the palate. Certainly sweeter than I’d ever exect from a 12.5% beer. Good, but there’s just something sullen and depressing about this beer that I can’t place.

Bottled vertical: 2008 vintage is 375 ml, 2009 vintage is 750 ml. Pours a translucent dark brown/caramel color, nearly still (after head quickly faded). Aroma is dark fruit and booze, with notes of plums, dark cherries and prune. Flavor is malty, sweet caramel, and dark fruit with overall delicious sour tang. A slight port complexity. From notes 1/23/10 (Geist Dark Lord tasting)

Bottle at Falling Rock Tap House in Denver. Pours pitch black and inky with no head whatsoever. Aroma is sweet brandy and some light anise, molasses, more sweet sugar. Flavor follows with thick brandy and molasses flavors, some light oakiness, burnt caramel, very sweet. Nearly no carbonation in this one, and on the sweet side which cuts through the thickness and puts things a bit on the cloying side. Big bodied though. I definitely liked the bourbon version better than this one, but would be nice on a winter day.

On my third and final flight at Stones Liberty Station outlet in San Diego on 17th March 2014. Came black with a thinning tanned head. Rich and deep malty molasses rule the nose and taste, this is one heavy brew with plenty going on to occupy your senses. A great send off from a lovely setting, slow walk back to the hotel took a bit longer because of this beer!

Poured from tap to glass. Dark hue with off white head . Huge aroma of bourbon, vanilla, oak, caramel, molasses, toffee, soy, prunes, leather, tobacco. Mouthfeel is fantastic with full body and soft carbonation. Taste is sweet initially with woody tannins in the following and ethanol finish. Overall...wow!

Dark brown pour with reddish tinge and no head whatsoever. Aroma of malts, caramel, raisins, toffee and vanilla. Taste of caramel malts, prunes, figs, toffee, vanilla and slight oak barrels. Slightly fruity. Full bodied, no carbonation. Very tasty beer, a little carbonation would have upped the score, felt like I was drinking a beer I had left on the counter overnight!

Bottle, 2009 edition. Pours dark brown with no head. Tobacco sauce, wood, dark raisins, molasses, leather, caramel, prunes. Full body, heavy sweet with some bitterness, acidity, tannins and alcohol to challenge it. Heavy, I find this a bit more rough than the bourbon version, and here is another cognac barrel that doesn’t really win me. I miss the sweet backbone that the bourbon has, this ends a bit raw and boozy.

375ml corked bottle from ??? (not sure - somewhere in CHI), labelled as "bourbon 2013", and cellar aged 10 months. Served at cellar temperature into my New Holland tulip. Pours a darker-than-cola color with an off-whte head leaving nice streaks of lace. Aroma has pure bourbony vanilla. On further inspection, chocolate and nuts and caramel show up. Lovely bourbon-heavy, though. Taste is of sweet vanilla, caramel, chocolate, some dark fruit, nuts ... and more sweet vanilla bourbon. Some alcohol presence, but super smooooooth. Medium bodied. Finishes mostly sweet - even a bit cloying. Different than most barleys; love the bourbon presence with the chocolate/caramel. Excellent brew!
