Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Our Angel’s Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak. The beer is available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations.

2009 release. The aroma is very fruity with plum, raisin and caramel. The taste is similar and the fruityness is really to much for me. Unbalanced. Low carbonation.

Bottle (375 ml) at home. Split 2˝ ways. At least 2 years old already, maybe more. Dark reddish-brown with no head or lacing to speak of. Aroma is complex with loads of figs and dark fruits along tobacco, roasted malts, bourbon, vanilla, oak, alcohol and molasses. Taste is moderately acidic so it probably mean that there’s something wrong going on in there but it’s probably an early phase since there’s still residual sugars. There’s the same dried fruits and molasses presence than in the aroma with the booze being more present and the bourbon/vanilla/oak trio also being upfront. Medium body. Dead flat. A bit vinous mouthfeel. Fruity and hot finish. Not what I expected (except for the lack of carbonation) but it’s tasty, rather complex and I would even say quite enjoyable (in small portions).

A great brandy aged strong ale. Pours a deep black with a tan head. Smells of lots of vanilla, caramel and booze. Taste is sharp, with lots of brandy all around, and a good amount a vanilla. A bit of caramel and red apples as well. Had on tap at the Winchester Goose.

Backlog. Vanilla, tobacco, dried fruits in the aroma. Palate is slick, some yeasty notes, strong hint of bourbon, well balanced, fantastic.

375ml bottle at the Hoppy Pub, Thessaloniki. Dark copper brown color with small beige head. Malty aroma, dark dried fruits, plums, figs, chocolate, caramel, vanilla, wood, alcohol. Sweet and light bitter taste like aroma with alcohol addition. Medium oily body with soft to flat carbonation.

On tap @ Chuck’s 85th. Pours muddy reddish brown with minimal head. Aroma is big rich earthy malts, heavy sweet barrel-aged notes dominate the finish. Taste is huge boozy malt, rich lightly roasty caramel flavor, full mouthfeel, big oaky finish with lots of alcohol heat. Still balanced, given all the malt here. Very approachable for a barleywine, not excessive in any dimension, just big. Outstanding beer.

Draft. Pours what is looking like a murky dark brown. Dissipating head. I’m gonna give the appearance the benefit of the doubt. Big. Complex. Full of character. Warmth with a mild booziness. Caramel, toffee, dark fruit, brown sugar..all that malty barley wine goodness. Strong and good. Initial sweetness gets balanced out. Great balance. Lighter full body. Superb.

Pours deep black with no head. Nose is dark fruits and carsmel. Aromas are roasted malts, coffee, caramel, dark fruits, with whisky notes. Creamy texture, low carbonation. Long alcoholic and sweet-roasty finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
