Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Our Angel’s Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak. The beer is available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations.

2010 ABV: 11.5% 375ml Bottling stamp on neck says 2010 but was released in Jan 2011. It is called the 2011 Angels Share Brandy.

Dark reddish brown, no head, none, looked like port in the glass. Aroma of dark fruit, raisons, vanilla, and a slight mustiness I presume from the oak. Complex, raisons, fig, dates, vanilla, caramel, molasses, wood. Alcohol hidden very well, excellent beer, but a tad too sweet for my liking, I wonder if some age in the bottle would dry it a touch.

12.7 oz, corked and caged, 12.5% abv, vintage 2014A. This is somewhat of an oddity in that I had an ’upgraded’ version on tap in Colorado some years ago, and am only now wrapping back around to the original. Nose is heavy brandy with a little port, oily even in the nose, tons of barrel character overwhelming just about everything else, but man is it good! [If there is a serious flaw here, it’s the way overstayed time in barrels, which could mask delicate nuance or even a bad recipe. I guess that is it’s calling card, though, it’s reason for being, and it’s a good one.] Caramel and vanilla, spirited booze. Pours tawny but ends up essentially black in the glass at full volume, briefest of heads. Taste sweet with caramel, toffee, strong and very punchy red fruit, firm fruit esters, wood/oak barrel character, brandy, vanilla, light toast and excellent rounding tannins sugary alcohol and gentle burning fusels. Full body oily, boozy, but not obese or undrinkable; it’s heavy but not the heaviest I’ve had this year ... seems to have earned the stature somehow. Very malty. There are some wonderful unfurling notes of tobacco leaf, and rum-raisin sugars before and after the flambé. Light-medium bitterness and a touch of yeast deep under the alcohol. Smooth and superb sipper, really exemplary traditional barleywine flavors married to strong, complex brandy/port overtones from the long barrel aging; it’s worth showing to someone to demonstrate just how varied beer can be, and it’s worth the high price point if you get to take the bottle home and enjoy it all by yourself.

Just so much here! Should’ve sent a poet.

12/17/014. 12.7 oz bottle. Not sure of the year, but labels says 12.5% ABV. Murky dark brown with basically no head. Sweet oaky aromas with caramel and dried fruit. Similar, sticky sweet flavors, hints of vanilla with a boozy warm finish.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown color with a smallish light tan head on there. Nose has some caramel up front with a lot of dark fruits in there. Taste is slightly sweet and very warming, and seems to have just a bit of wood and Belgian yeast to it. I like.

On tap at Beercraft. Pours a dark brown color without any head. Low carbonation. Very noticeable alcohol booziness that overpowers a little.

Bottle (12.7oz $18): Murky brown with little head. Sweet fig smell. Taste... Sweet. followed by some warming. Not worth the cost IMO.

Bottle. 2012 vintage. Dark brown pour with a bit of head that disappears, looks like a fine liquor after the fact. Aroma is loads bourbon, vanilla, raisins, caramel, and oak. Taste is toffee, caramel, burnt sugar, rum soaked raisins, followed by some light bitterness, oak, with a boozy spirit forward finish, mouthfeel is medium, carbonation is light but certainly not flat as some have suggested. Really nice barley wine, surprisingly boozy given I sat on this for two years.

375ml bottle. Burgundy colour, thin off white head. Lovely vanilla, oak chip and deep caramel nose, some vinous fruit action in there. Big boozy dark fruit and vanilla taste, lovely whiskey notes coming through, lovely and oaky, some spice, little bit of heat. More vanilla and deep caramel, filling it out nicely. Lovely figs, caramel and oak to finish. Lacking carb perhaps. Body is pretty good though. Well rounded, right amount of booziness, really very good.
