2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 GeneralGao (3545) - Iowa City, USA - OCT 19, 2006
Draught at the brewpub. Clear golden color with lasting white head that left some lace. Light citrusy hop and malty cereal grain aroma. Sweet maltiness on the tongue. The malt flavor is a bit overwhelming and unfortunately smothers the delicate hops that linger in the background. There is a touch of brown sugar flavor that lingers.

Sampled at the brewpub, September 28 2008. Dark amber in color with a small white head. Earthy aroma. Cardboard and smoke flavor, seems like this stuff is infected big-time. Contains absolutely no qualities of a pale ale whatsoever. Something is seriously wrong with this beer.
2.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 heemer77 (4799) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - AUG 4, 2008
Medium copper with a white head. Malty with a little bit of oranges. The taste is woody and nasty with some old watered down orange juice. There is a strange smoke note. I noticed this same strange smoky taste in their IPA. A little bizzarre. Earlier Rating: 8/15/2006 Total Score: 3.1 Sampled at the brewpub. The body was a fairly hazy medium gold. The aroma had oranges with some fresh ground wheat. There was also a hint of leather. The taste was bread crust withalmonds. There was also some decent toffee. The carbonation was a little sharp, but I thought it added to the nice mouthfeel. Decent.

When I was at the Duck, this was called Pintail Pale Ale, a new recipe.
From the tap, sampled at the proper cooler cellar temperature in a pint glass. A new recipe APA from the Duck that I had to try.
Poured a clear reddish orangey golden with a foamy white head that settled into a fine lacing.
Aromas of citrus and dry leafs, sweet cereal grains and a hint of butter.
Moderate carbonation overall and a softly crisp, dryish, watery, thin light bodied mouthfeel.
Disappointing thin, watery taste, watery citrus rind, not very pleasing, earthy leafiness that provides only hop bite, but the bitterness is so soft and watery that if you were in the brewpub with a bunch of smokers, you would have a hard time finding it, thin, thin, sweet cereal grainy malts, a watery backing, and a finish that has some dryness to it, but the watery, washed out hop and malt flavors doesn’t utilize it.
Washed out hops and thin malts leads to a APA I won’t be trying again.
