3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Elwood (1978) - Leesburg, USA - NOV 28, 2011
Serving: Draft at the brewery. It pours a cloudy brown with a pretty thick, light tan head. The nose is mainly spiced bread with some lighter dried fruit. The flavor is malt forward with a good bit of sweetness, holiday spices, fruitcake, and yeast. A decent amount of carbonation helps lighten things up. Rather tasty and drinkable!

Hazy deep ruby tinted brown coloured body with a nice three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of malt, toffee, alcohol, peat and a touch of nuts. Medium-bodied; Nice rich malt and toffee flavours shine through with a little sweetness and earth at the tail end. Aftertaste is quite complex with some peat and smoked notes, a little malt and a lot of sweetness from raisins and pit fruits. Overall, a nice and rather mild dubbel with no harsh flavours at all - relatively straight forward for the style. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Manassas, Virginia on 19-January-2012 for US$8.99 sampled at home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 13-April-2012.

On tap at Evening Star Cafe. Served in a tulip.
Pours a nice reddish-amber color with a hefty off-white head and a good bit of lacing. Great retention. The nose carries some faint spice and loads of dark fruit. Some cherry there as well.
The flavor falls downhill from the nose, as there’s quite a bit of grain tannin coming through and drying the beer and giving it a somewhat-unpleasant bitterness. Fruits are there covering up a lot, and the other malt flavors are nice, but it’s a bit too much to look past. The same goes for the feel. No real alcohol presence.
The nose was promising in this one, but the grain issues really hurt the finished product.
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 GT2 (4007) - Washington DC, USA - DEC 21, 2011
Cask at Paradiso Dupont. Pours a clear light amber, looking like a whiskey SRM. Reverse cascade head. Nose is chlorine and sanitizer along with muted spice and red apples. Taste is watery with odd butter and muted spice. So odd. Obvious diacetyl with almost some bourbon tendencies: heat and butter. Very odd. Small diacetyl masquerades as buttery bourbon. What a strange little beer. Abbey Dubbel....nope.

On tap at the brewery. Poured a medium-dark hazy brown color with a medium sized light brown head. Most certainly carbonated. Aroma was malty, rich with mild notes of spice, dark fruits, touch of chocolate in there. Will re-rate the bottles if anything changes once I have one.
