Tap at Smoke & Barrel in Adam’s Morgan, DC. Thin head formation atop deep ruby. Bubbles dissipate. Nose is black cherry cola and mild bourbon. Taste up front is a decent blast of soft bourbon followed by quite the thin, tart body. Mild chocolate character (like cherry filled milk chocolate faux truffles) fights with hefty lemon tartness. A nice first attempt. Feels overattenuated. Abv may be a bit low to attempt a bourbon barrel treatment.

Tap @ rustico - pours black with a tan head. Aroma is smokey and oaky. Taste is sweeter than I was expecting with a little alcohol in the finish. Palate is thin and leans dry. Solid effort, I like it more than the score probably indicates.

Growler filled yesterday at Whole Foods Market Fairfax/Fair Lakes. Pours a very dark brown color with a thin fizzy brown head that fades quickly. Aroma of chocolate, bourbon and faint wood notes. The taste is whisky, vanilla, roasted malts, chocolate, bitter hops. Thin bodied. Decent beer.

Pours a jet black with a medium coffee head. Aroma of vanilla, oak, roasted malt and coffee. Medium sweet roasted malt flavor with a bit of oak. Medium-bodied.

Serving: Draft at the brewery. It pours pitch black. Lots of coffee, some wood, and a hint of bourbon in the nose. The flavor is heavy coffee with burnt caramel, oak, and a surprisingly light bourbon note. The body is lighter than expected and it’s a welcome change from heavy dense stouts. Nice brew.

On tap at Rustico in Alexandria. Served in a goblet. Pours near-black with a moderately-sized mocha head and a good bit of lacing on the way down. The nose carries a fairly-strong dosing of bourbon plus some nice chocolate and vanilla notes in the background. The flavor focuses a bit too heavily on the bourbon, though the background is nice as well. Medium body with a bit of booze, though more of an overemphasis on the bourbon. Overall, pretty good and solid for a first barrel-aged attempt. The bourbon just came through too much; perhaps blending some of the base beer back in would have balanced things out a bit.

From tap at brewery and growler. Poured near-black, with a small off-white head. Aroma is mild vanilla, bourbon, oaked notes. Flavor is light roasted malts, vanilla, bourbon. Pretty enjoyable. Let this one warm up if it’s super cold - gets so much better as time passes.

Draught at Churchkey. Black pour, small ivory head. Nose holds beautiful soft notes of understated vanilla, bourbon wood, smooth roast, milk chocolate, and touches of lactic cream and espresso. Flavor brings more of that nicely integrated bourbon with smooth stout characteristics. Not a thick mouthfeel, but it really smooth and still rich in its quality. Surprisingly superb.

Black pour with an ample beige head. Huge bourbon vanilla in the nose with brownie like chocolate, ganache, cocoa nib, and milk chocolate. Extremely rich mouthfeel with silky carbonation and a sweet finish.

Draft at Churchkey. Very dark brown color, brown large bubble edge head. Aroma of caffe coretto. Taste is very porter-like, with plums, dates, and a subtle edge of whiskey. Decent stuff.
