Zlatý Rhino is an American interpretation of a classic Bohemian-style Pilsner, which takes its name from the Czech word for "Golden". Brewed with imported floor-malted Bohemian spring barley (the Tolar and Bojos varieties) and 100% Czech Saaz hops, this beer brings a balance of malty sweetness and delicate bitterness, thanks to the use of a painstaking decoction mash schedule and long kettle boil. Modeled after the beer that won first prize in the inaugural Pilsner Urquell Master Homebrewer competition in Washington, DC in 2011, this is an easy-drinking beer for the warmer days ahead. As the Czechs say, "Na zdraví!"

Light golden yellow coloured body with only a thin half centimetre tall just off-white head. Aroma of lemons, light malt, some mild earth and a touch of floral and perfumey hops. Light-bodied; Very floral flavour at fist with some definite lemon and perfume notes and a mild malt body with more of a hop touch at the end with no sweetness at all. Aftertaste shows some mild yeast flavours, but the taste is dominated by lemons and flowers, but only showing just a touch of the hops. Overall, a decent light beer marked with flowers and some mild citrus notes, but nothing assertive or additive to the style that you can’t get better in most other options for the style! I sampled this ful pint on draught at Whole Foods in Falls Church (Tyson’s Corner), Virginia on 01-May-2014 for US$3,00.

Draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear golden color with a thin white head. Poor head retention. Aroma of grassy hops, green apple and a tinny note. The taste is grassy hops, corn and pale malts. Medium bodied. Drinkable enough, but not a terribly great pilsner.

Draft at fireworks. Pours dark yellow with a half an inch of white head. Not ch on the nose. Slight floral quality on the tongue. There’s a metallic note on the finish which is off putting. Maybe the keg is a bit off?

Draft at growler. Poured a slightly hazy, golden yellow color with a medium sized foamy white head. Aroma was biscuit, straw, light malts. Flavor is bitter, with a touch of clean malts, and a mild hop and yeast character. Pretty drinkable.

Serving: Draft at the brewery. It pours a light gold color with a small white head. The nose is a mix of light malt and noble hops. The flavor has a touch of grain and a sharp, grassy bitterness. Crisp and refreshing with a clean finish. I thought this brew was outstanding.

Draft at the source. Hazy golden color, small white head, delicate lacing. Aroma of straw and white pepper. Taste is bitter throughout, full bodied, crisp straw, clean dry finish. Reminds me of my last visit to Prague.
