A brown ale with a thin moka head. A good burned wood aroma with fusel alcohol. In mouth, a good malt pils with smoked meat notes, caramel malt , very nicely done. On tap at brewpub, Jan. 3 2009.

(Rating #2076)

Pours a cloudy brown color with amber highlights and a medium, white head. Solid aroma of smoked malt that reminds me of smoked ham, just like the Schlenkerlas. Very good flavor of smoked ham on a lean, easy drinking body and moderate carbonation. This is a solid rauchbier.

My Bottom Line:
This meaty and suave Rauchbier develops levelled smokiness and crisp, lightly caramelized cereals in a soft and highly engaging lager vehicle.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the hazy copper.
-The chewy yet drinkable body is one of its best features.
-The flavor profile is well balanced throughout.
-The finishing smokiness blends nicely with the herbal hops.
-Carbonation is perfectly calculated to let all flavors shine and increase drinkability.
-This is more drinkable and perhaps smokier than Hopfenstark Stark Rauchen (for now, anyway).

On tap at the brewpub.
