Draft. Muddy beige head, dark amber body. Aroma is moderately sweet, wood smoke, light ash. taste is medium sweet, sour, light caramel. Low carbonation, light-medium body. I don’t know what happened to this beer, but it was a disaster.

A brown ale with a thin moka head. A good burned wood aroma with fusel alcohol. In mouth, a good malt pils with smoked meat notes, caramel malt , very nicely done. On tap at brewpub, Jan. 3 2009.

On tap: Pours a hazy deep amber mahogany with a stringy-lacing off-white head. Has a good smoky complexity in the nose with some ginger and woodiness. Starts with a thinner body and not much sweetness with some citrus tartness before a drier smoky finish. Not sure if the vinous acidity was intended, but it clashes with the smoky character.

UPDATED: JUN 23, 2009 My Bottom Line:
This meaty and suave Rauchbier develops levelled smokiness and crisp, lightly caramelized cereals in a soft and highly engaging lager vehicle.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the hazy copper.
-The chewy yet drinkable body is one of its best features.
-The flavor profile is well balanced throughout.
-The finishing smokiness blends nicely with the herbal hops.
-Carbonation is perfectly calculated to let all flavors shine and increase drinkability.
-This is more drinkable and perhaps smokier than Hopfenstark Stark Rauchen (for now, anyway).

On tap at the brewpub.

Draft at Churchkey. Brown, white head, solid lacing. Aroma of charred bacon. Taste of slightly sour charred grapefruit. Interesting.

(Rating #2076)

Tap at Churchkey. The pour is a very ugly unfiltered dirty apple juice color sort of like translucent, deep muddy russet. A cask looking, creamy, tan head gently subsides with big, sheety lace. Nose is all old apple juice with some mild smoked ham. Taste is old apple juice with tannic red apple skins. Weak in palate- comes across as cardboardy and watery. Very poor showing.

Pours a cloudy brown color with amber highlights and a medium, white head. Solid aroma of smoked malt that reminds me of smoked ham, just like the Schlenkerlas. Very good flavor of smoked ham on a lean, easy drinking body and moderate carbonation. This is a solid rauchbier.

Smoky and caramel malt nose. Sweet taste with toffee and dark fruit, smoke and ash. Light vegetal qualities. Bleh.
