Keg at the brewery. It pours murky deep brown with a small off-white. The nose is roasted malt, instant coffee, light smoke, leather, soy sauce and hint of marmite in the background. The taste is earth, roasted malt, toast, charred wood, some dark fruit, raisin and coffee with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A solid, drinkable porter.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
[330ml bottle, UtoBeer at Borough Market] Pours ruby red and highly effervescent, huge white head – looks like a Coke float. Subsides after a while. Smoky, chocolate aroma, fruit as well – the nose is fabulous. Chocolate on the palate, quite bitter – and prickly from the carbonation. Noticeable smoke on the aftertaste. Lovely stuff

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottled (from Utobeer, London). Very deep ambery brown colour, close to black, with a big foamy beige head. Aroma is nutty, roasted malts, some quite ashy notes as well as some mild earth. Flavour is ashes, some roasted malts, mild nuttyness as well some slight dark fruits. Rather pleasant but on the border to too much ashes and roast.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Dark brown with a tan head. Malty, chocolatey aroma. Richly flavoured but quite thin bodied, chocolate, odd sour note, dry finish. Harsh carbonation. I could imagine this being quite nice on cask.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
33cl bottle courtesy of my Dad. I met the brewer a few years back, a transplanted American torn between serving the market that existed and dreaming of making more assertive, bigger American micro styles. Pours a quite clear chestnut brown with some orange tints. Voluminous off white head, decent lacing. Aroma has some smoky malt right up front, hints of cocoa and coffee. Taste is much the same, a tad watery but I often find this with genuine English porters. Finishes a bit brackish. Decent.
