Nice bitter chocolate in the mouth, soft carbonation, a bit thin at times with a little dark fruitiness. Nice beer. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov13 3.4

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
15th November 2010
On tap at the Rake. Clear mid brown beer with a ghost of a cream coloured head. Light dry airy palate. Smoky malt and lots of bitterness sit oddly in the context of the palate. A trace of orangey hop - well buried. Finishes dry and bitter. Hmmm smoke, bitter and dry with no other features. This was never going to work for me!

A Mes rate. Tap at the Rake.
An attractive mahogany amber with a thin beige head. This is an interesting brew. Interesting and unusual actually. Rarely do you get something that is such an unabashed blend of smoke and bitter. I know these are elements you would expect in a porter but here they are ramped up and presented centre stage. Big smoky malty stuff inititally with a superb bitter chocolate and coffee finish. Amazing length. Through the bloody roof length. The bitterness just goes on and on. Very much else happening but sometimes complexity is not required. Itís just a bloody lovely beer.

Cask, The Rake, all-round rating.
Dark reding ale (really??), nice creamy head, smooth and very clean on the tongue, nothing offending, nothing particularly outstanding just a good middle of the range quaffer, ok bitterness, some chocolate, lots of grainial elements, too much grain, nice espresso touch and soft on the palate. Some sweet malty caramel. Sorry, just too bland.

Cask in the Hobgoblin, Reading, England. Pours dark amber, with off-white finger-deep head. Sweet dark malts on the nose, and quite smoky and sour on the palate, though not particularly fulfilling overall. Rather run of the mill.
