A Mes rate. Tap at the Rake.
An attractive mahogany amber with a thin beige head. This is an interesting brew. Interesting and unusual actually. Rarely do you get something that is such an unabashed blend of smoke and bitter. I know these are elements you would expect in a porter but here they are ramped up and presented centre stage. Big smoky malty stuff inititally with a superb bitter chocolate and coffee finish. Amazing length. Through the bloody roof length. The bitterness just goes on and on. Very much else happening but sometimes complexity is not required. It’s just a bloody lovely beer.

330ml bottle from Waitrose, Wokingham. Chestnut with a ruby glow and a billowing caramel coloured head; intense aroma of treacle, caramel, burnt sugar and spice, rich and appealing. Syrupy in the mouth, but not as sweet as expected, lots of smoke and peat from the roasted malt giving balance and a slight sourness; the finish is long and lingering, starting with a espresso coffee and then developing a velvet chocolate fullness, and leaving a touch of sweet cherries on the lips, and a warming feeling suggesting a much higher ABV. An excellent porter, the best beer of the Lovibond range I’ve tasted so far.

[330ml bottle, UtoBeer at Borough Market] Pours ruby red and highly effervescent, huge white head – looks like a Coke float. Subsides after a while. Smoky, chocolate aroma, fruit as well – the nose is fabulous. Chocolate on the palate, quite bitter – and prickly from the carbonation. Noticeable smoke on the aftertaste. Lovely stuff [21092011]

(bottle, 33cl) Hazy, ruby amber colour with a big and dense beige foamy head. Moderately sweet roasted and slightly smoked malty aroma with dark chocolate and very subtle fruity notes. Moderately bitter flavour, light bodied with a smooth carbonation. Complex malty flavours: roasty and delicately smokey taste with chocolate, mocha and liquorice; smokey and rich malty finish. Lacks a bit body, otherwise a gem. 11.XI.09

Medium sweet flavor, notes of bready toast, caramel, light chocolate, faint grass. Medium in body with average, smooth carbonation. Balanced finish, more toasty malts, some burnt sugar, caramel, mild earth. Very nice brew.
