UPDATED: MAY 31, 2005 Copper coloured, filtered Kellerbier; enormous burst of hops and fruitiness, ending very dry. One of the best in Franconia..........31/05/05: After a visit in the brewery tap it’s necessary to re-rate it! On draught: big hoppy nose - aromatic herbal hoppiness, close Your eyes and You feel like being in a hop-store....malty beginning with some fruitiness switching very quickly to a very long, long lasting dry bitter aftertaste. Extremely moreish.......!

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy/fizzy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is clear medium to dark yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs), with a light note of butter. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter, slightly husky. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Despite being several months before the expire date, this was a pretty mediocre showing from a brewer I was eager to try. Sadly, this batch was no comparison whatsoever to lagers from Nothelfer, Reh, Weiherer (selected beers at least, Weiherer has some serious diacetyl issues in some cases) and of course Lieberth (and the latter wasn’t anywhere near as fresh). This was comparatively dull and even had a bit of diacetyl. Slightly husky in the finish as well. Very small, giant-bubbled, quickly-diminishing head was not a sight to behold either. Certainly not terrible or anything, but very mediocre, just barely average. Probably more fun from the stoneware at the pub, but this sample doesn’t really make me want to visit.

Crock stoneware at the brewpub, Nov. 2012: Yellowish gold. Creamy and frothy foam. Freshly hoppy aromas of lemon, flowers, grass, and delicate spice entice the olfactory. Fine and creamy carbonation. Thinnish body. Quite juicily hoppy, with ample grassiness accompanying an appetizing lemony sparkle. Delicate brush of lemongrass bitterness perkily exudes amid the very lean and clean frame. Much welcomed starchiness lines the weightless malt character, which also features a vibrant and well-textured note of fresh baguette along with a dab of uncured hay. Hop flavors are wonderfully ripe, and feature a well-measured dose of sweet nectar to elliven the "greenness". Closes with suggestions of palate-clinging hay dust, and a very lively and greenly fresh hoppy vitality adorned with lots of pepper and slick, juicy grass clippings. A dry, clean, and highly quaffable lagerbier with succulent hops which continually beckon you for large gulp after gulp. Solid.

croc at Löwenbräu Buttenheim
huge rocky soap foam head. medium-light body with snappy clean malt and grassy, herbal, spicy hops. with the medium-low body and low carbonation is does seem to be a bit flabby, mostly in the finish. the fresh German hop character is quite nice: snazzy, bright, zingy acid seems to keep the body held together enough. lightly toasty malt is pleasant and clean, but this is really a hop vehicle, nice juicy / citrusy expression, with a nicely old-world doughy yeast character as well. very nice.

#265 Goldgelb mit viel Schaum. Grasige Hopfenaromen schon beim Einschenken. Test vom 14.11.2009, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 12,10,12,12,10,12 - 11,60

From the barrel. Poured into a ceramic mug with a sticky off white head. Pale malts, fresh floral and herbal hops, light woody notes, and a very clean and crisp finish. Comes across very fresh. One of the better beers I had on my trip to Bavaria.

Tap @ the Keller in Buttenheim. Hazy light brown appearance with an off white head. Toasty, herbal, a touch spicy, a bit woody aroma. Chewy, mild yeasty, a little bitter hoppy, woody/herbal flavor. Ok.

Bottle by 17.07.12. Nose of caramellous malt, grain, cracker, light herbal qualities (definitely in the direction of basil sauce on darker wheat pasta) and dog biscuits. Orange-leaning golden body with a rocky white head. Lots of interesting biscuit and cracker notes, very laid-back hop spice and bitterness. Semi-dry, medium body is smooth with little carbonation. Very low levels of citrus and fruit, but tons of complexity from malt and yeast and yet very easy-drinking.
