50cl bottle. Brown colour with a frothy and creamy tan head. Perfect lasting and lacing. Aroma is moderate toasted malts, nutty, slightly alcoholic. Flavour is slightly sweet at the beginning, then the flavour change to a moderate bitterness. Excellent balanced. Hints of nuts and almonds are present, bready and dense on palate. Carbonation is medium. Body is medium to high. Texture is slightly oily.

50 cl bottle, Sheffield, UK via The Dram Shop. Translucent brown, minimal head clings to the side of the glass. Chocolat and prune aroma, some caramel in the background. Sweet, brown sugar and molasses, a faint clove spice on the finish. Nice for the first day of snow here in Sheffield....but too sweet for a Saturday-night session.

ALLOVATE (1536) - Butler, WA, AUSTRALIA - FEB 3, 2012
Draught (?) @ The Löwenbräukeller, München.
Big, foamy head to start, recedes back to a compact and tight off white pad atop a fiery, deep ruby beer tinged with a little brown and kept alive by a very fine bead. Strong, almost savoury, fruit mince pie nose with lots of sticky, gooey sultanas, raisins, prunes and all the malty melanoidins that define a good bock. Warming, mulled wine and very sherryish with a hint of woody spice. Spritzy, bouncy mouthfeel mellows quickly to become treacly, full in body and smooth. Dry finish, woody, light smoke and burnt, bitter sugar showing. Resides well on the palate. Quite sweet and vinous, mild rust and blood notes late. A lot of the fruit cake of the aroma, heavy note of raisins, mild peat and wood with licks of vanillin play as it goes. Nice and warming for 7.6% but the alcohol remains at bay. This took me a while to down, which is not the point of a bierhalle, so I had to buy a bottle to try back home in Oz. Drinking it now, reminiscing of being back in München. In short: A sweet barley candy in a bottle. Meh.
How: Bottle 500ml at Die Stube, Brasov, Romania
The look: Clear dark ruby body topped by a small beige ring of foam
In long: Very light nose has a bit of toffee candy, this beer smalls almost nothing. Taste is mainly hard lollipop barley candy like I used to like so much as a kid, not so much nowadays. Also toffee, earthy malts, some tobacco, light notes of red berries. Not much hops to speak of. Mouthfeel is a bit sticky. Too sweet and straightforward for me although I must confess not being a fan of Doppelbocks to start with. It was a hot after-noon on a nice patio and I realized that the worst time to drink a straightforward sweet and sticky doppelbock is anytime.
