A really winter warmer. Nice strong alcohol taste in the palate. The beer is very flavourful and malty. A magnificant balance between the alcohol and the bitterness. A great brew.

Tasted on draught at the Munich HauptBahnhof(train station). Very dark brown in colour, especially when served brimful in half litre glasses. Flavour hints at chocolate with balanced bitterness and alcohol completing a near perfect package. I wish I could have one now!
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 RichardGretton (3759) - Leicestershire, ENGLAND - APR 10, 2003
Black beer, like a porter in appearance. The aroma is deeply bitter, and the flavour is bitter with a slight hint of chocolate. The bitterness makes the beer difficult to drink at times. Overall a bit disappointing but not too bad.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 bierkoning (8109) - La Tropica, NETHERLANDS - APR 6, 2003
Ruby brown color, small head. Malty aroma. Sweet very malty flavor, with peach. pear and caramel. Some bitterness in the aftertaste, that is overpowered by the malty sweetness. Nice and easy drinking full bodied doppelbock.

Bottled. Deep chestnut brown, thin beige but longlasting head and good condition. Good bocky aromas with raisins and roast barley and some melanoidin characteristics. Creamy and roasted flavours with a hint of pepperiness and a warming alcoholic finish laced with spicy malt and a mouthcoating of chalk.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 11/20 lovibond (115) - New York, USA - NOV 18, 2002
Big malty aroma with some chocolate. Unfortunately, a few of the bottles I purchased at a HL Markt had noticable levels of diacetyl (can’t blame a fermentation defect on the storage conditions).

Re-rate: Deep oak brown. Malt aroma with hints of chokolate, some vineous grapelike notes too. Deep bisquit and licorice taste.
Nice big and round.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 fiulijn (10421) - Como, ITALY - AUG 1, 2002
UPDATED: JUN 26, 2011 2010-11-18, bottle from Maruhn, Darmstadt, 6-4-7-3-12=32 Dark amber to brown color. There is a simple caramel aroma, a bit oxidized. Caramel flavor, some malt; the body is quite thinner than expected, and there is a light alcohol presence; even after calibrating carbonation and temperature it doesn’t get much better. Simple.
2002-08-01, draught in Italy, 5-5-6-3-13=32 Dark ruby amber colour, with a creamy head beautiful head. Fresh aroma, with some malt. Good body, strong and pretty dry, with a lot of caramalt, which also dominates the palate.

Like Augustiner Maximator, which is similar, this should earn extra points for its great name. This is a very dark dopple that is powerful to boot. Big and malty with chocolate notes this is fantastic.
