StewardofGondor (1934) - Washington Heights - Milwaukee, USA - MAY 24, 2006
Translucent and fiery cherry-amber in color with a creamy, oily and tannish-grey head. Head retention doesn’t entirely endure, but it was otherwise a beautiful looking beer. Aroma is right on target - peppered caramel, copper toffee, rich chocolate accented pecans and brazil nuts, and moderate brown sugar & allspice. There’s depth, if you take the time to take it in. Vibrant bock traits lead right into the big flavors, culminating toffee chews with cocoa abrasions. Fieriness carries through on peppery sails, further livened by slightly burnt apple wedges, now caramelized and sprinkled with bark shavings and nutmeg. Nutty pear traits and a hint of pralines & golden raisins further the alluring fruit flavor force. Heavy liquid fluidity on the palate with just enough carbon dioxide to pump up the volume. Perfectly balanced in its dominion. Swiss chocolate compacted between the tongue and mouth top comes out prevalently in the finish, along with broiled apples, flan and earthen wonders. This is one hell of a doppelbock.

Bottle from Kris. Clear deep brown with a huge tan head. Attractive. The nose is nuts, caramel malt, some cherry and brown sugar. Standard. The taste is rich caramel and wood. Roasted chestnut, more brown sugar. Strong malt flavoring with hints of sweet fruit in the long finish. Medium body, active carbonation. I’m actually really enjoying this beer - perfect for a cold, wet day. Overall, uncomplicated. Very good.

Bottle. Dark reddy brown with a thin beige head. Very malty. Dried fruity sweetness. Figs, prunes, dates. There’s a slim brandy warmth to it and a light bitter finish. Very nice.

50cl bottle. Pours chestnut brown with a red hue. The nose has demerara sugar and a hint of rubber. The taste has a tangy dark fruit - what’s that Thai fruit that I can’t remember. The palate is rich with a tangy middle texture and a lovely refreshing finish. Overall, a great beer!

Served in a beautiful stone mug at the Löwenbräukeller in Münich, almost next to the brewery. Great spicyness, fruit, cloves. Much more complex than other beers I’ve had on the trip.

0,5l bottle from Sörspecialista, Budapest. Clear dark ruby color with frothy off-white head. Sweet, caramel odor, roasty, caramel malty and alcohol aroma - it sound simple, but it’s very complex. Interesting dry taste. It’s sweet - as the normal doppelbocks - but some roasty bitterness also appears. It’s delicious. Full body with simple texture and average carbonation. Long bitter-sweet finish. It’s a very good doppelbock, not disturbingly sweet. It have a complex, balanced aroma and taste.

50cl bottle. Brown colour with a frothy and creamy tan head. Perfect lasting and lacing. Aroma is moderate toasted malts, nutty, slightly alcoholic. Flavour is slightly sweet at the beginning, then the flavour change to a moderate bitterness. Excellent balanced. Hints of nuts and almonds are present, bready and dense on palate. Carbonation is medium. Body is medium to high. Texture is slightly oily.
