BOLTZ7555 (1053), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Sep 8, 2008 This one was tremendously disappointing. The aroma was impressive and almost wine-like. Dark grapes, raisins, brown sugar, and caramel find their way to the nose. Mahogany pour with a nice meringue head that’s khaki in color. It all goes down hill from there. All alcohol and dark fruit...VERY THIN. Maybe I got a bad bottle...a VERY BAD BOTTLE. twitcher (293), framingham, Massachusetts, USA Sep 7, 2008 bottle. Pours an opaque very dark brown, vigorous pour yields a nice inch beige head that clears, but leaves a nice layer and lacing. Heavy sweet aromas of figs, raisins, caramel. Very fruity on the nose. Flavor takes a different turn- dark toasted malt flavors, aggressive booze on the palate, some sharp vinious notes. Faint dry tartness. Palate is full and heavy, with lots of depth to the flavors, moderate bitter/boozy finish. Overall, a very interesting take on a Quad. A bit overdone, but certainly good. Slow drinking. fonefan (10868), VestJylland, Denmark Sep 6, 2008 Bottle 75cl. @ home. Clear medium to dark red brown color with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly - fully lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to light heavy malty, caramel, berry - dark, plum, prune, light hoppy, citrus, moderate yeasty, banana, apple notes, rød gajol. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter with a long to average duration. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. (290608) MoDog (909), Griffith, Indiana, USA Aug 31, 2008 Poured from a 750ml caged and corked bottle and served in a tulip. This beer poured a murky reddish brown hue with a one-finger thick head of fizzy, tan foam that quickly settled into a thin, lasting cap. A decent amount of bubbly lacing was left around the glass. The aroma of the beer was made up of vinous dark fruits, candi sugar, caramel, and some alcohol. The flavor consisted of grapes, plums, dark fruits, a hint of chocolate, and an annoying element of dry, dull alcohol. The mouthfeel was crisp and full-bodied. Definately not one of the finest examples of the style. Pretty average. Arayaga2 (932), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 26, 2008 Hazy brown with a thin, off-white head. Aroma is piquant caramel apple, with a note of alcohol. Taste is same, but sweet, with toasty chocolate , and vinous apple skin (cloying defect), which carries well into the finish with a medicinal alcoholic undertow (GF 6/10). $10/750ml heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Aug 26, 2008 From a 750ml bottle. The bottle was hazy dark brown with rusty orange at the edges. The head was large and biege tinted. The aroma was rich and fruity with some peaches and cinnamon. There was also some vinous character that seemed a little dry especially compared to the fruit. The taste was surprisingly dry with some vinous character and a little bit of plums. There were also some herbal and medicinal notes. Both are short lived as the vinous character and booze came through in the finish. I was not impressed with this one. However, others that liek a cheap wine character in their beer might appreciate this one. yespr (11613), Copenhagen O, Denmark Aug 16, 2008 75 cL bottle. Pours clear yet deep hazzlenut brown with a lacing tan head. Aroma is mild spiced of cinnamon and a bit of cardemomme, mixed with caramel-toffee and mild yeasty notes.Sweet and slight oldish flavour, yeasty and caramelish too. Slight sweet and fruity finish with a distinct herbal honey like accent, going gradually more dry. Surely a quad, yet somewhat more on the herbal and less sweet side. GarrettB (494), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 14, 2008 I was surprised to look of De Proef and find that they brewed many more beers than I thought - many I had tried but never connected back to its proper source. So I approach this Lozen beer with a certain mindfulness, knowing now that these folks have made so many other previously enjoyed but uncited beers. A thick foamy tan head rises up to greet the mouth of the bottle, pushing along a creamy and smooth aroma: a slight hops, nuttiness, a dark wood scent and plenty of dark fruits like figs give this beer a shadowy substance well before I even get a chance to see the color of the beer. It’s dark brown, by the way. Supplementary aromas include extremely well kiled chocolates, which end up tasting like a mix of milk chocolate shavings and sheer malts. I go for a sip, eager to paint my tongue in a dark coating of flavor, and I’m assaulted by a combined force of carbonation and alcohol. Once that subsides, though only slightly, I get a slight hops spiciness, but mostly a moderate woody flavor, semi-dark chocolate and layers upon layers of alcohol, lapping onto my tongue like the sea to the seashore. Later, before the aftertaste, the alcohol mitigates itself, but even then it’s still simply too much. In fact, all these flavors combined makes for something of a bourbony beer, and even when that’s the case the alcohol is simply just too much. Apparently this needs a little more aging before it can be properly enjoyed.
