Lozen Boer

In short: A very much overly sweet Abt. Ok in small servings. A full bottle grossed me out
How: Bottle 750ml. Consumed relatively fresh some 6 months after purchase.
The look: Cloudy ruby body topped by a very small beige head
In long: Nose of a sweet alcoholised fruity dessert. Flavour elements include sweetened dates, sweetened figs, cookie malts, sweetened blackberries, some fudge, brown sugar, tobacco. No hops presence. Annoying crunchy brown sugar presence. Overall sensation of fig cookies. This is a lame effort by the usually good De Proef, De Proet Lozen Boer is De Proef Lazy Beer.

Deep, clear amber, long lasting creamy head, quite attractive. Aroma was sweet bready malts, dark fruit, a touch of milk chocolate, and alcohol. Flavor is heavy on the malt, bready with a bit of nutella spread across it, with some apricot and fig notes. Alcohol heat present as well, detracts a touch. Nice brew here, the chocolate was an unexpected but welcome note.

Corked bottle. Whew! After only a little bit of the beer had begun to rest in the Duvel tulip glass, an aroma of strawberry jam surged into my booger caves. A nice, thick head of beige sits atop a goeey, liquified apple butter body. Further olfactoral inspection yields a bit of peach, fig, and just a sweet touch of peach honey and sweet grass. Nice lacing around the glass. Flavor is a plumby raisin swirl, with touches of dark fruits dispersed throughout. Boozy, bitter finish of sweet bread and earthy spices. Thick, coating mouthfeel. Very enjoyable brew; nice sipper. I’d love to buy a couple more and cellar them.

Got this bottle from Sam’s in Chicago. This is one of the weaker quads we’ve ever had. Thinner body. Good tan head. Aroma was similar but lighter in every respect. Just less of everything. Quad that should be aspiring to dubble. Little bit boozy. Finish is ok. Not a session.

750 ml cork and caged bottle from EZ Liquors. Pours a dark chocolate brown with burnt orange edges and a large creamy tan head. Aroma is nice and complex with an overall sweetness, notes of burnt candi sugar, vanilla, butterscotch, raisin, plum, dates, figs and yeast. Flavor is rather complex with an initial burst of chocolate and sherry that gives way to dark fruits, burnt toffee and caramels, dark rum, yeast and even some wood. Body is medium to slightly thin with rather astringent carbonation and a good dose of alcohol warming. Maybe it’s just because I haven’t had a beer in a week but I’m rather enjoying this one especially at the ridiculous price of only $4.99 a bottle.

750ml Bottle: Aroma of Belgian yeast, raisins, dark ripe fruits, slight funk, light caramel, light figs, slight alcohol, and malts. Poured copper/ruby/amber in color with a small, beige head that lasted around the edges and as a film on top of the beer. Cloudy. Lightly sparkling. Full of large particles throughout. Complex flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of Belgian yeast, light alcohol, raisin, dark ripe fruit, caramel, tobacco, light wood, malts, maple syrup, figs, slight vanilla, and light rum. Medium body. Slightly thin, lightly chalky texture. Average carbonation. Sweet, malty, dark ripe fruit, and caramel finish is dry.

Dark red-brown, opaque. Tan head, no lacing. Aroma is funky and hot, a little metallic from a decent hop burst. Also smells like wood organisms. Smells rough around the edges. The palate is smooth and nice. Flavors are nice, smoother than aromas and equally as funky. Port wine/sherry qualities. Dark fruits, dry slightly bitter finish.

Sampled from bottle at Raleigh World Beer Fest. To be honest, I’m glad I didn’t invest in a bottle. I dig most of the De Proef beers, but this was probably my least favorite. Not as much wildness/funk as their other selections. Too sweet. Purple/copper brown pour. Figs, cherries, raisins, and other dark fruits as well as candied sugar and caramel. Sugar bomb all in all, and a surprisingly harsh alcohol burn.
