Appearance: cloudy red, huge creamy beige head settles down to a lingering fiine head, starts with solid lace and eands up with drippy streaks of lace once the head settles,
Aroma: sweet dark ripe fruit aroma with lots of rum raison cookie character,
Body: creamy body,
Flavor: rich malt flavor, lots of fruity character, sweet ripe raisons and dates, touch of candy caramel adds to the sweetness and brings out the fruit, the yeast shot adds some bready character that melds well the sweet fruit to make a rum cake, little to no aparent alcohol, very light bitterness in the finish adds some balance but does not detract from everything else,
Overall: the creamy body and ripe fruit flavor combine for an exceptional treat

GG (1613), NorCal, California, USA Apr 7, 2006 Wow, what a nice find!! A dark fruit, malty-sweet, earthy nose. A beautiful dark ruby reddish/purple color with incredible conditioning. VERY smooth, creamy and velvety in the mouth. The flavor is rather complex with brown sugar, notes of chocolate, cherry, raisins, whiskey, finishing nice and dry. I can’t believe this has so little ratings for such an incredible beer. I will be looking for this again. mmather (113), Colorado, USA Jul 30, 2007 Loved this beer. Lots of caramel, well balanced with the high alcohol content. Overall, I believe it stands up well with other beers of its general type. I was sharing this one with a large group and had a hard time letting it go. Needless to say it disappeared fairly quickly. KAggie97 (2406), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA Jun 10, 2009 Corked bottle. Whew! After only a little bit of the beer had begun to rest in the Duvel tulip glass, an aroma of strawberry jam surged into my booger caves. A nice, thick head of beige sits atop a goeey, liquified apple butter body. Further olfactoral inspection yields a bit of peach, fig, and just a sweet touch of peach honey and sweet grass. Nice lacing around the glass. Flavor is a plumby raisin swirl, with touches of dark fruits dispersed throughout. Boozy, bitter finish of sweet bread and earthy spices. Thick, coating mouthfeel. Very enjoyable brew; nice sipper. I’d love to buy a couple more and cellar them. Jokes (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 20, 2006 Deep chestnut with a fluffy, cappaccino-colored layer of stiff foam. Whole grains, maple syrup, candied apples, raisins, plum brandy, caramel, cocoa, purple grapes, fresh dough and some light smoke. Even estery hints of tropical fruit from the yeast. The body is big and smooth with nice carbonation, leaving a nice prickly sensation on the tongue. The complexity of the nose belies the depth of malt character. Layer after layer of whole grains, fruit, cocoa, more fruit, cocoa, light alcohol and some residual sweetness. The alcohol is apparent, but not overpowering, just long and warming with a slightly spicy finish. Not in the same class as Westvleteren or Rochefort, but it’s still damn tasty. I think the additional time (four months or so) has done this beer well. harlequinn (2745), Tacoma, Washington, USA Feb 15, 2006 This was an interstingly complex and interesting belgian. Full of deep and rich complexity, super malty and chewy on the mouthfeel. Dark fruits, raisins, walnuts, sweet, sweet caramel, and just a hint of dates and plums. Alcohol could be masked a little more with all this flavor, but it is not over the top, and is very soothing all the way through to the finish. Kinz (2179), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Jun 23, 2009 Deep, clear amber, long lasting creamy head, quite attractive. Aroma was sweet bready malts, dark fruit, a touch of milk chocolate, and alcohol. Flavor is heavy on the malt, bready with a bit of nutella spread across it, with some apricot and fig notes. Alcohol heat present as well, detracts a touch. Nice brew here, the chocolate was an unexpected but welcome note. willblake (2160), Belcamp, Maryland, USA Aug 27, 2006 30.04.06 750ml bottle at HWOH. My notes call this De Proef special brewmaster Belgian Abt , so this looks to be the one. Dark teakwood colored beer with tight beige head. Big and sherryish aromas on this quad-like beer (I see know it is a quad) with great roundness from a bout of dried dark fruit flavors like fig and raisin. Dry, woody, and corky. Full bodied, it finishes with a tart bite that is unexpected and maybe out of place, but it’s pretty good. Lively. Seems like a pretty good rendition of a quad, to me, and if that’s what it’s supposed to be then more power to ’em.
