UPDATED: MAY 15, 2012 Draught at the Pig and Whistle in Kyoto. Golden, clear, with a great, big, tight head. Very malty, bready nose, grains, a bit of honey, spice. Sweet and simple flavor, very malty, bready, almost no bitterness. The old Lucifer tried to be Duvel, this seems like it’s trying to be Leffe Blonde. Boring.

An evil beer with a yeasty, spicy and candied aroma. Very active with white foam head and thick yellow color. A taste that is equal parts sweet and tart, and a body that is light yet zesty. I had a very high expectation for this beer, and was somewhat disappointed that it seems slotted below the Carolus line up.

750ml bottle poured into my Chimay Trappist glass. Rating number 666, I figured this one would fit perfectly. Pours a cloudy dark gold with about a finger of white head. Aroma of spicy Belgian yeast, green apple peel, a little caramel and a little citrus. Taste is light sweet and light sour. Green apple, caramel, dark fruits and Belgian sugar. Medium bodied with a somewhat thin texture. Fizzy carbonation and a decently long finish. Overall, not bad. I’ll gladly drink this one again, but maybe a 12oz next time.

Fine beer not not exeptional. It somehow tries to be a Duvel but it lacks some oomph. Not bad, not great.

Bottle. Golden, hazy, average and mostly diminishing head. Moderate, malty - wheaty and sweetish aroma, light caramel, fruitiness and some honey, faint hoppyness, yeast. Body is medium, malty - wheaty and sweetish flavor, light caramel, fruitiness and light spiciness (light coriander, faint pepper), faint hoppyness. Finish is average, malty - wheaty and sweetish, light caramel and some fruitiness, light spiciness and hoppyness, some yeast. Fruity Belgian ale - too sweet for me.

Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy/fizzy, white, mostly lasting. Body is medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs, flowers), lightly yeasty (basement/cement), with a light note of pepper, hint of ammonia. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Pretty clunky, just like the Riva version. Meh.

On tap at Cheeky Monk in Denver. Pours golden orange with a huge foamy white head. Aroma is of yeast, wheat, citrus, some dark fruit, and barn floor. Taste has the Belgian yeast that is expected, as well as wheat, slight citrus, and some dark fruit, Has a very dry malt taste, along with some barn floor qualities. Moderate carbonation make this easy to drink. A decent beer that suffers from a lack of carbonation.

bottled. lightly hazy shade of golden with a lasting bulging head; loads of apple schnapps in the aroma; yeasty tang, hints of apple peel and plenty of alcohol showing. not bad but one glass is more than enough
