A traditional Scottish malty beer, finely balanced with aroma hops. This copper coloured beer achieves a fullness of flavour and body from the wide range of speciality malts used in the mash (6 different malts) and the high mash temperature, which results in some unfermentable sugars remaining in the finished beer. These beers are always fermented with a Scottish yeast.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - dark brown to black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - molasses and biscuit. Tar. Taste - more molasses. Black jacks. Biscuit and honeycomb. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - good level of complexity.

Bottle from Cornelius, final delivery. Gyle 236. Pours deep deep brown red, off white head. Malty raisin nose. Lovely medium full body, soft fizz, smooth. Chocolate, molasses, malt. Light bitter finish. I'll be honest, I opened this with some trepidation- too many memories of student pints of very average farty heavy. However, this is a revelation, what a pint! So much more flavour, body and palate than anything I had back in day. Sad this is the last of it.

Cask by gravity. Dark dark oak brown. Rich sweet dark fruit aroma. Fireplace. Deep with good core strength. Rich. What a good 80/ should be.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Deep brown body with a thin off-white head. No lacing. Aroma of earth, raisins, grass, tea and milk chocolate. Flavour of lightly roasted malt, brown sugar, prunes and a grassy finish. Light bitterness. Thin to medium body with a watery texture. A really good example of the style.

Cask @ The Pot Still. 5.2%abv. Dark reddish chestnut brown, reasonable head. Fruity caramel malt aroma. Sickly sweet grassy malt flavour. Bitter aftertaste. Harsh & unbalanced. Not a good beer.

[cask at the Hanging Bat, Edinburgh] Deep mahogany brown beer with a small white head. The aroma is predominantly sweet toffee, caramel, some Demerara sugar. Flavours are similar, although it’s not as sweet as I was expecting, particularly in the finish – however there’s plenty of toffee and caramel throughout [28012013]
