on cask in the hanging bat, pours a murky, caramel with a fair head and good lacing, aroma is caramel, sweet toffee, hints of a sour note. Taste is much of the same with some dark fruits, dates/prunes thrown in for good measure. alcohol hidden really well

Perhaps it was just the fact that this was the only beer on at the Hanging Bat the night I was in that wasn’t hopped to high heaven, but this was exceptional. Bettered only by the same brewery’s 56 shilling. A beauty.

Caramel orange brown, hazy, thin white head with a touch of lacing
Aroma of caramel, soft smooth toffee malts, good nose
Taste of caramel malts, smooth fruity toffee, soft bitter hop, some raisin fruits, very mellow and smooth, alcohol very well hidden, super mellow flavour, great balance
Palate - Medium body, quiet oily, smooth caramel toffee on palate. Finish as main flavour with some toasted malt coming through
Overall - This was just so mellow, alcohol very well hidden, smooth, well balanced, very well made. One of the best strong ’brown’ bitters I’ve had - it comes to prove brown bitters can be done well.

McNeillR (1242) - SCOTLAND - FEB 8, 2013
Stern nut brown body, substantial white head and sweet Pecan nose. Initial taste of an unspicy malt underlay, smooth and creamy mouthfeel whipping any real kick or bitterness to the ESB into submission with a crisp, cool hop finish.
A very straight laced ESB, no whip cracking hop but a smooth and almost Wheat beer-ish mid-range. Very smooth, as ever ridiculous from Stuart hiding the ABV. First time I’ve had it on cask, sweeps up any neatness in hop more pleasingly than bottle.

Cask, Hanging Bat, Edinburgh

TRace of animal on the nose. Super easy foamy head and lots of bubbles. Sulphery flinty nose with some clove and seems fizzy and citric.

Bottled@chriso. Golden colour, big fluffy white head. Aroma is fruity, floral, mild caramel, some nectar as well as some mild herbal notes. Flavour is fruity, floral, nectary, mild floral and herbal notes along with some sweet malts and mild yeastyness. Also a bit of alcohol sweetness coming through. Pleasant and balanced though.

[500ml bottle courtesy of cgarvieuk] Golden yellow pour with a short-lived head. Aroma of orange fruit, chalky bitterness and some sweet caramel. It doesn’t really taste like an ESB – there’s no leathery spiciness in there – but I like what I’m drinking. There’s a decent mix of the fruity citrus and the calm, tangy yeastiness [06072012]

6 July 2012, bottle at cagarvie's legendary tasting. Yellow, clear, no bubbles. Nose is lots of honey, caramel. Med body and faintly fizzy. Lots of honey, caramel. Not that nice. Lots of sugar, nothing to balance, nothing exciting. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
