COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A traditional dark beer, which uses 4 different malts to achieve the intense flavour with a hint of bitterness derived from roast barley and chocolate malt. A London yeast is normally used for the relatively warm fermentation, which adds a slight fruitiness to the beer.

Tasted this at the Troon Beer Festival in October 2010. Cask, gravity dispense. Dull black in colour with no head. Plain chocolate present in the short aroma. Thin oily mouthfeel and no lacing at all. Dark malts deliver sweet mocha chocolate and plump juicy raisins full in the mouth. Slight prickle of dusty hops comes through in the short aftertaste. Finish is malty and slightly dry but flavours start to drop out at the end rather weakly though for a 5%. An ok mild and maybe off form on the night.

RBESG Sheffield 2009 Grand Tasting @ the Harlequin. Chestnut color, small light brownish head. Malty, caramel, some hops in the aroma. Taste is sweeter than expected. Caramel, earthy notes, soem hops in the background.

[cask at SRAF’11] Deep, dark brown pour with a thin white head. Fruity aromas along with roasted coffee and a slight bitterness. On the taste, fruit opens up before the dark roasted flavours come on, and then a sour edge. Interesting stuff, seems to flit between all the bases without stopping too long in any of them. Really drinkable [16062011]

Cask at SRAF ’11. Dark inky brown with a beige head. Interesting nose: wood polish, sea salt, lots and lots of rhubarb. Pretty dry palate, but the rhubarb taste is still there. Slightly nutty with hints of liquorice, too. Some roasty linger. Surprisingly complex, I actually like this.

UPDATED: AUG 21, 2010 Bottle at RBESG 09 Sheffield. Hazy dark brown colour. Mild, but with some good hop, not bad, but difficult to rate after the Mikkeller Stella
