Sampled at happy harrys beer and bacon festival in grand forks. Lots of Roasty and woody notes. Nice stout.

What a bizarre beer. Its a super dark brown color, light brown head. Flavors? All over the map Roasted malt, vinous tart flavors, browed butter, charred oak, ash...hard to wrap my head around this beer.

Very dark pour some tan head. Aroma of leather, long pepper, malt toffee, lactic, caramel, raisins. Tastes strongly of raisins, tobacco, dairy product. Some buttery acidity like wine from the barrels. Some smoke flavor. Mid-light mouthfeel for a dark beer. Spice from the oak . This definitely is a half beer half wine. the orange peel and cardamom donít make it through all the other components which is okay from an already very complex brew.

Draft at JL Beers Fargo. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Doesnít leave much lacing. Slight red wine note on the nose. Thereís charcoal and kool aid on the tongue. A bit watery in the tongue. Hides itís alcohol well. Unfortunately it doesnít hide itís dreadful taste.

I have no idea if I am putting this rating in the right place, but the bottle looks the same and everyone else seems to be putting their ratings here, so... - black pour - minimal lace - has some tart and tannic notes in the nose that are decent, but there are also strong aromas of DMS/boiled cabbage, burnt popcorn, char - flavor is sweet chocolate up front, as well as mild roast and smoke - later flavors of burnt popcorn, light DMS, light copper, mild tartness - overall messy and confusing - their lager was terrible and this isnít all that good (although I likely wonít pour it down the drain like I did the lager) - I have one more beer from this brewery to try - I am not looking forward to it.

12 oz bottle pours black with a tan head. Aroma of sweet malts, cocoa and fruit. Taste is real complex, dried fruit, malts chocolate and a hint of coffee.

Bottle. Pours a black color with tan head. Chocolate, raisin, bbq brisket aromas. Burnt sugar, raisin, malty, oak flavors. Alright.

UPDATED: APR 1, 2013 3/8/13 Recent bottling 10% LOOK: very dark with thin mocha head NOSE: musty wood, damp soil/mud, cherry cigar tobacco, burnt old coffee, fruity something...probably from the wine cask, some chocolate, smoked oyster TASTE: tangy coffee, bitter chocolate, cherry cigar, some taste of smoked oyster as well, long tangy/bitter coffee finish FEEL: nice smooth feel...feels like I just smoked a cigar OVERALL: didnít notice the 10% at all, unique and pretty good... not great though... a lot going on, but doesnít seem to all come together very well Room temp Pair with smoked oysters possibly? UPDATE: yes, very good with smoked oysters!!
