A rich Foreign Style Stout whose sweetness is beautifully balanced with ample hops and bold roastiness

On tap at the brewpub - Pours medium / dark brown with a tan head. The aroma has lots of smooth chocolate, roast, hazelnuts and mild coffee - comes across as a brown ale meeting a stout. It has a medium smooth body with delicate soft carbonation. Flavors begin with smooth chocolate (mild dark), nuttiness, hints of vanilla and very mellow coffee. The finish has light earthy hops joining the mix. Really nice foreign stout. I seem to be a sucker for the style a lot.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a deep charcoal color with a small white head. A nose of metal, coffee and light roast. The flavor is more metallic roast, dry coffee, berries, some ash. Good.

A clear dark brown stout with a thin dark brown head. In aroma, good chocolate malt with coffee grinds, a bit musty. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate with coffee notes, herbal, raspy, quite nice. On tap at brewpub at Hawthorne, Oct. 7 2012.

Tap at Lucky Lab (Hawthorn) - 06/11/12. Light black with a thin tan head which soon clears to the edges and forma a pond. Nose is light roast malt, molasses and a hint of liqourice. Tastes of roast malt, chocolate, liqourice, touch of soy. Medium bodied with light spritzy carbonation leading to a roasty dryish finish.

Roasted coffee and chocolate. Somehow creamy and thin and the same time. Nothing too special.

Tap at Hawthorne location - black pour with a sticky tan lace - a very slight mouthfeel - medium body - I have never tasted so much diacetyl in a stout before - very buttery - this overcomes the more pleasant notes of bittersweet chocolate and roast - lightly bitter finish, with lingering butter - meh.

Cask at the brewpub. Black. Sparkler-induced brown head. Aroma of chocolate. Taste of watery chocolate.

Tap at the brewery. Pours a nice black with a thin off white head. Roasted grain, chocolate aroma, slightly dry. Touch of caramel, hops, roasted grain and chocolate in the taste. Finishes a little roasty and dry. Nice.

Tap @ The Lucky Lab Beer Hall... Poured near black with a thin, light tan head. A pretty dry stout with straight forward roast, chalky tones, some mold yeast esters, cocoa and coffee, oatmeal and barley sweetness.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours coal black with a light brown head. Has a malted chocolate aroma. This is a dry, but also a milky stout. It’s smooth with great thickness on a solid palate. The thick lacing walls the glass. I detect a really nice licorice flavor as well. This beer lies in the midpoint between a dry and a sweet stout.
