Boystout (824), Chisinau, Moldova Oct 15, 2003 A huge beer: intensely sweet/malty, coffeish, caramelly, roasty, alcoholic etc. There is some bitterness in the finish (due to alcohol or hops?).
Furseth (1188), Kungälv, Sweden Sep 10, 2008 Bottle @ Dustek pub-Gdasnk Polen. Dark red colour, with almost no head. Aroma of caramel, gras, malty and some coffee in the end. Flavors is licorice, and caramelly. medium body, and a nice thin to medium sweet fnish. lAlpedHuez (9), Brookville, New Jersey, USA does not count Aug 11, 2008 Beer of the month from where I sit -- and great value for money to boot ($1.99 per).
Bought at the not-too-pretentious-but-very-uiseful Circle Liquoirs in Pennington, NJ (800 beers in stock)), and a very pleasant surprise! Loved the Cyrillic chracters on the label, which I was just able to decipher for Circle’s beermaster (Richard)as "Porter", which led me to the impulse buy. So glad I did.
Won’t bore you with the usual "slight hints of chocolate and oak on the fully rounded palate..." yada-yady-yada-- others here can supply that.
But this is simply a terrific, full value porter, and that’s reason enough to grab it if you can find it. FWIW, a nice alternative to my (very hard to get -- and far more expensive when you can) favorite, Rochefort Trappiste 10, acrdz (4489), Boulder, Colorado, USA Aug 11, 2008 Updated: Aug 16, 2008500ml bottle. Pours dark brown, some dark red light making it through, but properly dark and intimidating. Light brown/tan head. This thing gets to tasting like a barley wine... perhaps some barley wines these days are using some chocolate malt or roasted malt, but there’s a fuzzy dividing line here... Nose is big, semi-sweet, lightly roasted dark fruit. A burst of bourbon, various distilled products, bourbon, brandy, rum, etc. It kinda works with the dark fruit... but it’s still foreign nd strange. Creamy and rich palate. Excelently warming. I’ve had the bottle for a while, the age is showing but it’s really delicious. (Edit: I think I was drunk when I wrote the above) adrian910ss (1051), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 2, 2008 Pours a dark cola with a medium sized beige head. Aroma of malts, bitter cocoa and brown sugar. Taste is malty with bitter cooca and brown sugar flavor. Eructoblaster (1275), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jul 10, 2008 Bottle - 500ml. Dark brown body with good beige frothy head. Decent malty/hoppy aroma with brown sugar hints. Well balanced taste carries sweet and plummy notes. Ends with a good warming finish. Enjoyable, especially after a long series of bad, tasteless East European Lagers.
