3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle; a lovely deep ruby colour, with a thin but lasting nicotine coloured head; a roast malt and baked fruit aroma; high carbonation; slightly sweet; roast malt amd bitter chocolate in the taste, with a little spice; a hoppy finish with some fruit; perhaps slightly over-carbonated but plenty going on and all told a pretty tasty drink.

GBBF. Cask. Clear dark brown beer. Light dry palate. Good malt with a streak of sour chocolate. Well hidden hoppy fruit at the very end. Nicely joined up and tasty.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Black beer with a strong head. The aroma is mildly roasted, and the flavour is pretty deeply roasted with a deeply bitter and fortified body and finish. Overall a really flavoursome beer.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Hand pulled pint in a local pub 10 Nov 2011: Dark ruby red body, almost black unless held up to a light source: on top sat a head that was creamy in colour and texture.
The taste and smells were very similar, bittering hops (Styrian Goldings, Millenium and Nugget according to the website) and roasted/toasted malts (Crystal and Chocolate malts). The hops just about won the smelling contest, the malts triumphing in the taste, the beer being slightly malt sweet with some mild hop bitterness in the finish.
Easy to drink and the body strength hides the 5.4% ABV nicely.

3.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle from Best Western Malt House Hotel, Stoke-on-Trent. Pours a dark, cloudy, cola brown with a small head. Cracking aroma of burnt sugar, syrup, malt, brandy sauce and Christmas pudding. The taste is bitter, hoppy and very long but, if I’m honest, not one I really enjoyed - Benylin cough medicine with a bitter aftertaste. It lacked the depth and range of flavour that its appearance and aroma promised.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500ml bottle. Dark amber with plenty of creamy head. Loads of lacing. Nice aroma with malts and some alcohol poking through. Lovely mouthfeel with some pronounced fruitiness and a bitter finish. My memory of the cask version was that the fruit shone through even more, but unless you’re fortunate enough to have this brew on tap locally the bottled version will certainly suffice. A beer I’ll return to many more times.
