The Northwestís original, unfiltered and dry hopped amber ale. African Amberís pioneering and innovative style is proof that drink-abilty does not have to be achieved by sacrificing flavor. This beer erupts with a floral, hoppy taste, followed by a well rounded malty middle, finishing with a nicely organic hop flavor. Locally sourced two row grain and a blend of specialty malts give our amber its rich taste. Further complexity is achieved by leaving the beer unfiltered, providing exceptional flavor, as well as giving our amber its unique "cloudy" look. Lastly, we actually place a bag of fresh, locally grown, Yakima valley hops in each keg creating what has become the original, cult classic, northwest amber ale.

Enjoyed many a pint of this one at a number of places in Seattle, and particularly enjoy this one on draught at the African Lounge, which is an outlet for Mac and Jack beers at SETAC. This beer is a fantastic example of amber ale, with lots of great hop aromas, flavor, and bitterness, paired with really great sweet and caramel malt flavor. This beer pour to a hazy, deep amber color, with a creamy white head, and a good bit of carbonation. The nose is outstanding, with lots of big, fragrant, lemon/grapefruit hop aromas. The palate is firm, with some really good pale, sweet, and caramel malt flavors, paired with a nice fruity back drop of tangy, citrus hop flavor. This beer finishes with more really good sweet and caramel malt up front, then ends with a very pleasing, lemon/grapefruit hop bitterness that lingers. An excellent pint of beer, one that must be tried when ever you visit the Seattle, WA area.

Draft. Pours clear copper with a lasting white head. Aroma is very biscuity, nutty, earthy. Flavor is balanced, quite bready, lots of biscuit and toast, earthy hop finish. Medium body, well rounded feel, well carbonated. Like a better version of Fat Tire.

Draught at the African Lounge, 8/19/16.
Itís cool to see this still in existence! Iíd always wanted to try this back in the day, but somehow never did. This was quite a iconic beer and I can see why. Itís hazy, with a soft, malty-sweet yet well-attenuated texture that a lot of American beers back then didnít have. In addition, itís got tons of fruity, lightly juicy hops that place more emphasis on the aromatic and flavor compounds than they do the bitterness. As well, though itís amber in color, itís very different from the grainy, iced tea-flavored, monotonous malt creations that dominate the amber ale style. Almost like an unintentional precursor to the New Enlgand IPA and sure enough, though itís got nowhere near the hop character, itís not THAT far off from something like Bissell Bucolia, which is quite high praise, at least in my opinion.
Anyways, fun beer, good piece of history and glad to have finally tried it.

Aroma: Earth, leaves, grainy / dusty malts
Taste: Dirty / earthy malts with a great grain build and the right amount of vegetal bitterness
Palate: Murky but crisp
Overall: A great balance of earthy, malty, bitter...one of the more unique / stylized but palatable Amber Ales

This was smooth and had a mahogany flavor. It was smooth and finished so well, did I say it was smooth? This was a very good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark copper pour. Smells of caramel and bready malt. Taste follows the nose with just a hint of hops. A solid amber.

Pretty good Amber, especially since Iím not a big fan of the style. On the sweet side, pours...well...amber, and has a strangely acidic finish. Creamy mouthfeel.

Balance of aroma not pleasant; quite a lot of fizz. But too sour to work with the sweetness.
