Bottle. Pale golden body, small head. Sweet grainy aroma. Sweet bready taste, low bitterness. Drinkable all malt lager, no off tastes but generally pretty safe and boring. Ticked a new country!

500ml can from a Jewish shop in Stamford Hill, brought to the 9th Shrewsbury Bottle Share Oct 14. Didn’t realise it was a year out of date til I got home. Pours gold with hazy floating sediment. Musky sweetcorn aroma. Taste is honey, sweetcorn and off-putting euro-lager flavours. Not great.

500ml can: almost a year out of date. Shared between four of us at the October 2014 Shrewsbury bottle swap: cheers Mat. Bog standard international lager/pilsner, fizzy, odourless and tasteless: like so many in this style. Golden, bright, clear and clean body, white unlasting crown. Slight honey like sweetness could be found if you tried hard enough within what flavour there actually was. I bet it would be very refreshing and thirst quenching on a hot beach but Autumn in the UK is not the time to drink this light looking and tasting beer.

Well alongside Goldstar is Israel’s other macro-beer Maccabee, which is a better than average pale lager apparently made with all-malt. On draft, this beer is very smooth, crisp, and light-bodied, but the taste likewise is rather light to the point of being almost bland. Same for aroma. In short, a fresh but indistinct light pale lager, but at least avoids any adjunct or industrial off-flavors. OK if you’re looking for something quaffable and refreshing in the hot midday sun, but if you’re looking for more substance and flavor, go with Goldstar.
