Originally brewed by Mackeson of Hythe in Kent in 1910. This was the first beer to use milk sugar to produce a Milk Stout. The Mackeson brewery was eventually acquired by Whitbread, which in turn was taken over by Interbrew (now AB InBev) who initially produced the beer at their Magor brewery in Wales. Subsequently has been contract brewed by Youngs and latterly by Hydes.

Aroma of roasted malt, burnt veg. Pours pitch black with thin tan head. Slight lacing. Mouthfeel is on the thin side, clean and smooth, near to flat. Mildly bitter roast malt flavour with weak sweet/creamy coffee notes. Lightly sweet, mildly dry, roast malt finish.

330ml can into glass. Pours pitch black with large coffee coloured head. Smells like milk chocolate and coffee. Tastes like iced coffee. Mouthfeel is medium and milky. With your eyes closed this IS iced coffee. Nice but weird.

Pours mahogany with quickly disappearing head that leaves some nice lacing only 2.8 abv by t doesnít taste watery more hoppy milk with liquorice and chocolate notes CV would pass for a mild or oiastmeal stout.

Can from Morrisons. Pours mahogany with a tan head. The taste is slightly sharp and tinny, but with some reasonable roasty flavours of coffee and liquorice. Itís pretty thin as expected, but this is actually pretty good for the ABV.

Can from Co-op, Wrekenton, Gateshead. A black beer with a thin white head. It has a rich milk chocolate flavour, vanilla and oak notes with a creamy chocolate milkshake finish. Very nice for such a low ABV beer.

Appearance is opaque, brown tinges at the base. A one finger beige foamy head. Aroma- caramel, sweetness, milky, chocolate, cocoa. Taste- dry roast, chocolatey, milky, some sweetness with hints of caramel, but it actually becomes bitter at the end. A bit fuller in the mouth than expected, given the low abv. Perfectly drinkable and pleasant.
