Aroma: Typical dark malt aroma of toasted grain.
Mouthfeel: Creamy head and body. Fruity hints. Small body, but not as thin as I expected.
Taste: Not particularily sweet. Starts tart and chocolatey. Balanced with just a gentle hint of sweetness at the end. Toasty like a schwartzbier. This beer is very subtle. I like the dark grain flavours, though.
Finish: Dry, astringent with metallic tones and a very mild sweetness on the throat and palate.
Overall: Quite pleasant, uncomplicated beer. I could have a dozen in one

330ml can. Dark brown-black colour, foamy beige head which diminishes leaving some lacing and aroma of roast malt, coffee & chocolate. Taste is sweet roast malt, some fruitiness, an earthy smokey bitterness and nutty notes. Watery thin mouth feel, light to medium bodied, low carbonation, clean finish. OK.

Normal stout appearance, black with a short, creamy beige head. Aroma is almost nonexistent, but taste is normal stout bitterness. elements of coffee and chocolate, an overall decent stout.

Happiness is a big black pint. In this case it is only amplified by the fact it was a gift from Cantabrian (gratefully shakes the hand extended in friendship). This is a historical beer for my Yorkshire roots and one I’ve always heard about but never got around to trying. It appears jet black and has tawny notes in the dimple of the glass. A latte coloured head sat and sank into a thickish skim across the top of the beer. The aromas are firstly, and oddly to me, of blackberries, boysenberry icecream, jersey caramel, toffee brittle and creamy coffee. It is the most unusual and unexpectedly charming aroma. It suggests gentleness, and afternoon sessions in the pub watching sheets of rain soak passers by and of a moment to myself that my wife doesn’t know about. In the mouth it is unctuous and creamy with a touch of charry roastiness and filling mouthfeel. I find this beer to be enormously fulfilling, an ideal sessionable beer. One worth savouring and maybe replicating? Hmm, thinks I.

Can. Little foam head. Smells of milky cream and roasted malt. Sweet taste that gets better as the temperature increases. Excellent session beer.

Can. This is a classic milk stout. Love it when you want the smooth stout taste but not so much alcohol.

I had been counting the days to try this historical beer, Thanks to Adam Goddard, who send 2 x 4packs to Germany while I visited. The historical value is priceless and so is the experience. As the first milk stout, this original does not disappoint at all.One alert before pouring though: please do not use any care when pouring. Do it deliberatley and rather sloppyish, so you will apreciate a great looking, creamy, chestnut head, over a dark brown, almost black, rather opaque body. The cushioned head will behave like a wonderful creamy, foamy cover of freshly milked milk, no wonder the label still bears a milk churn. The aroma is not overwhelming, but on the other hand it has no hints of dairy effluents either (as some good modern Milk Stouts sometime suggest). Chocolates, roasted malts and plums. Nothing wrong with that. Flavours do wander into the coffee world, but keep to milk chocolates, roasts, dried fruits and a nice, not too pungent hoppy bitterness. Like a Murphy’s, but, sweet, without the sourness. And with the full knowledge of the low alcohol content, the pleasant alcoholic tinge comes as a surprise. Now, isn’t that just perfection then? Certainly it is not full bodied. Medium to thin, still the palate is creamy, smooth, with a velvet feel. Milky! They still cannot re-instate the term "milk", forbidden since war times, but the palate does not lie. We gotta put this great beer into perspective. The low scores in this site are vastly unfair. Must be hopheads expecting the punch of an contemporary imperial stout. Had this Mackeson Stout been (wrongly) styled as a "low alcohol", this would be a "100"!

Can. Black stout large beige head. Aroma of roasted malts. Taste is sweet with chocolate and roast malt flavours. Texture is a little watery. I used to hate this stuff years ago, but now I can quite easily drink it.
