Originally brewed by Mackeson of Hythe in Kent in 1910. This was the first beer to use milk sugar to produce a Milk Stout. The Mackeson brewery was eventually acquired by Whitbread, which in turn was taken over by Interbrew (now AB InBev) who initially produced the beer at their Magor brewery in Wales. Subsequently has been contract brewed by Youngs and latterly by Hydes.

Can from Sainsbury’s. Pours a dark brown colour with a thin tan head that dies away. Aroma is a little sweet with caramel, roasty malt and oatmeal. Similar flavours with caramel and Weetabix flavours. Not too bad and, although sweet, it doesn’t spoil this beer for me.

Always had a soft spot for this. Light in alcohol, but the beige head and creamy feel underpin a great old milk stout. Unusually sweet in an era of stouts and porters with high IBUs. This has an old fashioned feel, and was reputed to be offered to my mom when she was in hospital having given birth to me. A guilty pleasure, but I like it!

Can 0,33ltr: Opaque black with an pretty sweet taste but just not annoying, and some milky feel way in the back. I like this low-alcohol Stout.

I have a sweet tooth so I may be biased but this is lovely stuff. Metallic nose. No head. Slightly bitter taste with a very sweet chocolate and extremely mild coffee noted aftertaste. Yum yum.

Can from Tesco. Appearance - thick tan head, reasonable lacing on glass, black / ruby on edge of glass, overall appearance not bad out of a can. Aroma - weak roast, malt, dark sugars. Taste - dark sugar, sweet bland malt, bit of cola - very little aftertaste - a bit bittersweet. Thin and watery in mouth. Not much at all but not offensive. More flavour than to be expected at 3% but flavour isn’t all that great. More like a stout version of shandy - just sugar pop

Can. Dark brown with a tan head. Roasty aroma with some sugary malts. Sort of thin, metallic, with cheap coffee notes. Simple and industrial - not as good as the US/Caribbean XXX variant.

Can - Quite surprised by this one. Pours black with the aroma giving the first hint of the sweetness to come. Smooth sweet flavour with the gentlest roast malt aftertaste.

330ml can. Pours jet black with a medium tight head. Aroma is roasted malt and sugars. Taste is very sweet, roasted malt. Quite full for the 3%. Reminds me of a Brewdog Paradox.
