COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Available filtered and pasteurised in cans. Previously 3.0%.
Originally brewed by Mackeson of Hythe in Kent in 1910. This is the first beer to use milk sugar to produce a Milk Stout. The Mackeson brewery was eventually acquired by Whitbread, which in turn was taken over by Interbrew (now AB InBev) who initially produced the beer at their Magor brewery in Wales. Subsequently has been contract brewed by Youngs and latterly by Hydes.

Can, August 2009. I know this is a classic beer and all that but, on my first tasting of it for many years, it just didnít do anything for me. Quite dull and watery. Some extracty malt character. Way too sweet and sickly for me. Quite interesting, especially from a historical perspective, but not really my thing.

Can 330ml.
Clear dark dark brown color with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, sweet malt, vanilla. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet with a average duration. Body is light to medium, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. [20090731]

Appearance: poured with a jet black body and a somewhat brown head. The head retention was poor, however readily returned when the glass was swirled.Smell: the first real aroma from this stout was a strange metallic scent, with sweet liquorish undertones. A heavy smell of dark fruits also came through. Taste: smooth and creamy, with a smoky coffee taste. There is a also a faint liquorish aftertaste. Mouthfeel: the mouthfeel is full bodied and heavy, which is surprising considering the small ABV of this stout. Drinkability: the heaviness of this stout makes it less drinkable than itís counterpart, however, it does seem to provide a warming feeling without a high alcohol content. I do find the Mackesonís stout a definite heartburn inducer, especially after more than a couple.

330 ml can, ASDA. Surprisingly tastefull for a 3% beer. First impression is lactose, sweetened milk. Light body but full taste on tongue. Hard to define the last sip: one canís enough. Pleasantly surprised though.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2009 This is a real old-man beer. Epitomises that old geezer, wolly sweather, pipe and sliper vibe. This 27 year old picked up a 4 pack just for a laugh. Flavours,ok flavours .Sweet and cloying.Cold coffee ,molasses and rasins.Like Sam Smiths Oatmeal ílightí.

I didn’t expect much when I picked up a 4-pack of these fairly cheap. I poured one in a glass and took a good sip. It was surprisingly very good! It’s like Guinness with more flavor. It’s nice and dark yet very smooth. It’s sweet and tastes of coffee with a slight bitterness. My wife’s not a big-time beer drinker but definitely liked this one. It’s a stout that I’ll certainly buy again.

Can @ home. Nice black colour, creamy head. Sweet nose, roasted malts. Taste is initially of roasted malts, coffee and some bitterness, but gets really sweet in the end. The sweetness stays. Soft and full mouthfeel, but this is too sweet for my liking.
