3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Can. Opaque, dark brown pour witha dense, creamy and stick-to-the-sides-of-the-glass beige head. Dark malts, faint roast in the aroma, with some light caramel and lactic sugars. Very sweet flavor, prunes and light char, plenty more lactic sweetness, not much bitterness. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Sweet finish, perhaps too much sugar, really, with not enough roasty bitterness. Altogether not that bad.

1.4 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
275ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Creamy sweaty sock aroma. Brown, almost black colour with no head. Tastes better than it smells - sweet liquorice & malt flavour but still not great. An old man’s drink.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
33cl can. Pours a very dark - almost black - brown with a medium though short-lasting beige head, leaving a fair lacing. Some light fruit aromas with a milk chcolate, lactic sweetness. Similar flavourwise finishing with some sweet raisin notes and a light, roasty bitterness. Smooth on the palate, light carbonation, medium body.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
A - Deep black color with a small tan, bubbly head. Not much retention and really no lacing left.
S - Pretty faint but it is predominantly roasted malt with a fair amount of chocolate and some other dark sugary smells.
T - Roasted malts and bittersweet chocolate make up most of the flavor, and the backbone of the beer. Along with these is a bit of caramel and dark/burnt sugar. Some nutty and earthy flavors come through in the middle, and there is a very faint minty taste at the finish.
M - Medium body with low carbonation. Smooth and creamy with a slight stickiness.
D - Goes down easy and with the ABV, you could drink it all day. The flavors are bad, and would definitely solve a thirst for a slightly sweet stout. Flavors are a little weak and don’t build enough to really intrigue me into more though.
Notes: Not a bad beer, and definitely does not seem like a 3% ABV. Not overly sweet, but much more sweet than a normal stout.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20
275ml bottle. Sweet smoke and meaty iodine on the nose. Tobacco and sugary sweetness in the mouth. Milky texture and hugely drinkable. I actually quite like it.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very dark with a good brown head, roasted malt aroma, taste is slightly sweet smoky roasted malt, smooth and bitter, not at all a weak taste. I have always liked this stuff.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Can, August 2009. I know this is a classic beer and all that but, on my first tasting of it for many years, it just didn’t do anything for me. Quite dull and watery. Some extracty malt character. Way too sweet and sickly for me. Quite interesting, especially from a historical perspective, but not really my thing.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: poured with a jet black body and a somewhat brown head. The head retention was poor, however readily returned when the glass was swirled.Smell: the first real aroma from this stout was a strange metallic scent, with sweet liquorish undertones. A heavy smell of dark fruits also came through. Taste: smooth and creamy, with a smoky coffee taste. There is a also a faint liquorish aftertaste. Mouthfeel: the mouthfeel is full bodied and heavy, which is surprising considering the small ABV of this stout. Drinkability: the heaviness of this stout makes it less drinkable than it’s counterpart, however, it does seem to provide a warming feeling without a high alcohol content. I do find the Mackeson’s stout a definite heartburn inducer, especially after more than a couple.
