COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Available filtered and pasteurised in cans. Previously 3.0%.
Originally brewed by Mackeson of Hythe in Kent in 1910. This is the first beer to use milk sugar to produce a Milk Stout. The Mackeson brewery was eventually acquired by Whitbread, which in turn was taken over by Interbrew (now AB InBev) who initially produced the beer at their Magor brewery in Wales. Subsequently has been contract brewed by Youngs and latterly by Hydes.

Pours jet black, tan head for a bit. The nose is chocolate milkshake, no discernible hops. Across the tongue it is thin and oily, condensed milk sweetness on the way out. To sweet for me, not enough body.

Can bought at Sainsbury’s. Pours an opaque black with a thin head. Coffee and caramel aroma. Medium body with a sweet mal and coffee taste. Not bad but too thin for a stout

Hints of coffee and evaporated milk sums it up not much to this beer and I didn’t know it was retired. Page 293 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide and only 328 out of his 500 Classic Brews to go.

Can - Quite surprised by this one. Pours black with the aroma giving the first hint of the sweetness to come. Smooth sweet flavour with the gentlest roast malt aftertaste.

Tin from Tesco. Never had this before as it was always overpriced but they’ve dropped the price so here goes. Wow this is great. Fantastic roasted toffee malt aroma with a roasted sweet body and a fairly bitter sweet finish. Lovely

Not the worst beer I’ve had. I was surprised at the low 3% alcohol level. I would try it again...seems like it would be good with wings.

Very milky and sweet. Similar too a coffee. Very thick and quite nicely put together. Very unique which is great and interesting to enjoy.

An enjoyable stout. Dark brown completion, smooth and refreshing taste. Purchased in a four pack at the arcade mart. Surprised to see such low alcohol by volume. But unlike Hoegaarden it didn’t come with a free glass. Oh well. Cheers!

Thick, dark colour with a decent brown head. Aromas are predominantly sweet, and malty, slightly nutty and just a little bit smokey - very little alcohol presence. Taste is sweet, sweet, sweet, very little bitterness. Certainly a classic, though I prefer something a little punchier.
