COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Available filtered and pasteurised in cans. Previously 3.0%.
Originally brewed by Mackeson of Hythe in Kent in 1910. This was the first beer to use milk sugar to produce a Milk Stout. The Mackeson brewery was eventually acquired by Whitbread, which in turn was taken over by Interbrew (now AB InBev) who initially produced the beer at their Magor brewery in Wales. Subsequently has been contract brewed by Youngs and latterly by Hydes.

Can. Black stout large beige head. Aroma of roasted malts. Taste is sweet with chocolate and roast malt flavours. Texture is a little watery. I used to hate this stuff years ago, but now I can quite easily drink it.

Can from Morrisons. Pours mahogany with a tan head. The taste is slightly sharp and tinny, but with some reasonable roasty flavours of coffee and liquorice. Itís pretty thin as expected, but this is actually pretty good for the ABV.

Can from Co-op, Wrekenton, Gateshead. A black beer with a thin white head. It has a rich milk chocolate flavour, vanilla and oak notes with a creamy chocolate milkshake finish. Very nice for such a low ABV beer.

Appearance is opaque, brown tinges at the base. A one finger beige foamy head. Aroma- caramel, sweetness, milky, chocolate, cocoa. Taste- dry roast, chocolatey, milky, some sweetness with hints of caramel, but it actually becomes bitter at the end. A bit fuller in the mouth than expected, given the low abv. Perfectly drinkable and pleasant.

Meh. Takes what I liked about the XXX and dumbs it down, and unfortunately still has the thin palate. Iíll pass on this one.

Can into a Hoegaarden glass. This is a perfectly drinkable milk stout, but not likely to get rave reviews. It wears is chocolate and lactose colours on its sleeve, and while its a good balance it does taste a little lacking.

Got some cans from the local co-op in Cowes. Easily drinkable with aromas of chocolate, coffee and spruce. Light abv with high drinkability and full body. Was surprised by the quality of that piwo. Thumbs up.

Four-pack bought at local co-op in Cowes. Pours out in a deep black colour with low smooth head and medium body. Aroma of torf and milk. Taste of torf, woods, milky coffee and malt. Roasted dry finish. Not my kind of beer.

Can from Beers of Europe. Pours dark brown, long-lasting tan head. Aromas of light cooked cherries, dark sugar. Taste is light sweet. Decent body for the strength. Drops off at the end, but decent enough.

33cl can thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely crema head. Nose - fruit cake and molasses. Some black jack sweets. Taste - dried raisins, brown sugar and coca cola. Palate - light to medium bodied but then too sweet throughout. Overall - yeah, better than I expected but the sweetness gives the impression of a sickly soft drink. Have to say itís good for the low alcohol though.

Can 330 ml at home, into a snifter. ABV only 2.8%! Pours a very dark beer, alnost totally black. One finger of dark brown head, with average retention, leaving light lacing on the glass and some foam on the beerís surface. Aroma of coffee, hints of chocolate and light roasted malts. Subtle but smells good nevertheless. Taste also of coffee, some roasted malts on the finish and on the aftertaste with just a touch of bitterness there, but mostly sweet. Thin body, okay carbonation. Overall quite good taking its low ABV into account, could be an everyday dark beer, certainly better than drinking a macro lager.
