Originally brewed by Mackeson of Hythe in Kent in 1910. This is the first beer to use milk sugar to produce a Milk Stout. The Mackeson brewery was eventually acquired by Whitbread, which in turn was taken over by Interbrew (now AB InBev) who initially produced the beer at their Magor brewery in Wales. Subsequently has been contract brewed by Youngs and latterly by Hydes.

Can. Black stout large beige head. Aroma of roasted malts. Taste is sweet with chocolate and roast malt flavours. Texture is a little watery. I used to hate this stuff years ago, but now I can quite easily drink it.

Can from Beers of Europe. Pours dark brown, long-lasting tan head. Aromas of light cooked cherries, dark sugar. Taste is light sweet. Decent body for the strength. Drops off at the end, but decent enough.

33cl can thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely crema head. Nose - fruit cake and molasses. Some black jack sweets. Taste - dried raisins, brown sugar and coca cola. Palate - light to medium bodied but then too sweet throughout. Overall - yeah, better than I expected but the sweetness gives the impression of a sickly soft drink. Have to say itís good for the low alcohol though.

Can 330 ml at home, into a snifter. ABV only 2.8%! Pours a very dark beer, alnost totally black. One finger of dark brown head, with average retention, leaving light lacing on the glass and some foam on the beerís surface. Aroma of coffee, hints of chocolate and light roasted malts. Subtle but smells good nevertheless. Taste also of coffee, some roasted malts on the finish and on the aftertaste with just a touch of bitterness there, but mostly sweet. Thin body, okay carbonation. Overall quite good taking its low ABV into account, could be an everyday dark beer, certainly better than drinking a macro lager.

Can from BeersofEurope, Review for thebeerguy. This was the second time I had this beer, the first in a pub in Tutbury, Derbyshire. Expect a real creamy beer, with peaty, smoky wood notes, and light malts. Very smooth, with a strong smoky finish.

2.8%! 2.8%! I canít remember the last time I had something this weak but I bet I didnít enjoy it as much as this. Sat in some working mens club in Stockport, drinking my way through the bar and realised there was a rate. Black with a pale tan medium head after an aggressive pour. Roasted malts, some sweet milky chocolate, coffee and chocolate grow as it goes on a bit. I was very drunk but I enjoyed this.

Can. Nose is roast, slight smoke, toast. Taste is smoke, sugars slight lactose leading to coffee and a little caramel. Mouthfeel is thin. Itís a northern classic and in the dark days of beers in the 90s it was a reliable favorite, but is ultimately quite ordinary. .

330ml Can from BeersOfEurope website (£1.49):
Sweet and milky with some lactose and a few lighter than expected malts coming through with a touch of chocolate an a little sugar towards the end but the balance is good throughout.
Black with a beige 0.5cm brown head on top that holds quite well.
Sweet with lots of milky lactose and sweet roasted malts with a mix of chocolate and very light coffee plus a touch of caramel towards the finish.
Mostly smooth but slightly chewy right at the end. The beer has a medium to full body which is quite impressive given the abv. of this one and as I mentioned it is pretty sweet as well.

An interesting beer and packed a fair amount of flavour considering the below average alcohol content. The taste is pretty nice although perhaps just a little bit too sweet in places but the fact that itís not overly strong makes it a very easy one to drink.

Appearance: Dark brown/black with cm tan head. Aroma: Bread, roast malt flavours, pepper, grass and note of caramel. Taste: Low/medium sweetness, bitterness and sourness. Palate: Thick smooth texture, light body, average carbonation, dry lingering finish of burnt, smoky, tobacco like and bread flavours. Comments: Tasty and refreshing. Very easy to drink.

UPDATED: SEP 28, 2013 Can from Tesco. Slight burnt sugar aroma, with hint of milk creamy chocolate aroma... Overall the aroma is very subtle. Very mild taste, again burnt sugar, and the slightest hint of milk chocolate, sour aftertaste is off putting. mouth feel is silky smooth and slight oil.
