dark as the la brea tar pits, mammoths are advised to avoid open pools of mackeson. actually it does have a warm brown glow that emmanates from deeply within, like a vulcan mine smoldering deep under a mountain. a remarkable froth of almost reddish umber espresso creama on top. a nose as big as a toucan’s and just as colorful: you’ve got your french roast and figs, maple and dark chocolate. the flavor delivers the same--it only remains for me to adjudicate a verdict on the added sugar. like sweetner in an espresso, it probably aids drinkability-- or renders it portlike and functional as a desert. but...but...it’s really too sweet for me, alas.

Immaculate taste for this class. The yard stick for sweet stouts.

’Indra’ hit it on the head. Top notch Stout. Bought the 6 pack and still 2 left. Best when nearly room temp and after a bite of good chocolate--Crazy but true.

Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is black (not quite opaque, but close). Aroma is moderately malty (mild coffee, roasted, dark chocolate), with a note of licorice and a hint of tar. Flavor is moderately sweet. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Pleasant clean aroma, but only trace amounts of balancing bitterness...like sugar water on the tongue.

Appealing sweet, roasted aroma with a tad of semi-sweet chocolate. Dark tan head, and believe me, this beer is *dark*. Even held up to a light, it’s still brown-black and no light even shows around the edges. Unusual. Very tiny bubbles, head is there, though. Sweetness is instantly apparent, along with some very distinct coffee flavors, burnt grain, and assorted toasty flavors. Interesting balance between the ’earthiness’ and the lactose. Not much at all in the way of bitterness here, but that’s okay. I think it would be quite contrary to the point the brewer is trying to make. Thick lacing on the glass, and I drank this after I let it sit out for almost half an hour, realizing as with any beer that straight out of the fridge, this beer wouldn’t be the same at all. Better than I remember, but I’m glad I didn’t buy a whole sixer. Some beers are just like that, whether you like them or not, 6 is sometimes just too much. Overall, though, I do like this beer.

A very nice stout! Everything in the description is pretty accurate: coffee, slightly sweet, chocolate, earthiness. Very nice looking dark tan head. The aroma isn’t great on its own but it strangely goes nicely with the flavor as you taste. Slightly sweet aftertaste that fades pretty quickly.

UPDATED: DEC 9, 2003 A working mans stout. Sustenance and flavor without all the alcohol. Just light, smooth and creamy. Come on - Beer isn't all about the alcohol!
