3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 larsga (5325) - Oslo, NORWAY - APR 23, 2012
Medium brown head. Opaque black body. Sugary metallic caramel pudding aroma with chocolate notes. Sweet-dryish milky chocolatey taste with earthy notes. Mid-bodied. Very mild and smooth mouthfeel. Dryish roasty chocolatey aftertaste with coffee and caramel notes. Some funky character to it, too. Nice and drinkable, and very smooth. Interesting. (0.275l bottle, Wellcome, Lohas Park, Hong Kong.)

11.16oz bottle - pours so much foam that I’m typing this with a bunch of beige foam in my mouth. Black in color with nice lacing already. Flavor is chocolate, caramel, roasted malts and metal. Clearly sweet, especially to the lips. Toffee aftertaste. Really nice and smooth.

Bottle at home in Barbados. Pours to form a nice looking drink, yellow tan head. Good smokey aroma. Nice balance of sweet and bitter, some coffee and mocha. Good beer, better than I had hoped. Getting a stock in the fridge

It is a beer dark and complex as the label would imply but ’triple stout’ does not mean darker and bolder. There are more spices and roasted malts mixed together than other stouts.

Mildly sweet and malty throughout. Not bad, drinkable but not exceptional.

THE CARIBBEAN VERSION BREWED BY CARIB. ’Triple Stout’, no less. Bottles and cans walking to Berts, along Accra beach Xmas night, at Oistins fish fry in physical pain from the level of bass, at The Fisherman’s Pub, Speightstown, happy hour at The Reggae Lounge, St Lawrence, on the balcony, at The Jenners New Year’s Even, even. My tipple of choice in Barbados, when I saw it. Glossy, onyx beer with a cratered yellow-tan head. A beer that utterly eclipses the pale shadow of those (Guinness, Mackeson) it was presumably brewed to imitate. Aroma of fudge smeared on rusty girders; smoked kippers, almonds. Slippery, full and utterly convincing with a tropical-suited, sugared slickness brilliantly counterpoised by bitter, espresso roast and a distinctly irony tang completely absent from most British/US stouts...stouts full stop come to think of it except some of those amped up to 11 with ABV and sugar. Thick, soupy, meal-like, almost bloody..and shockingly bitter/sweet in the finish like black coffee with 3 brown sugars..or Guinness Original when I first tried it as a 15 year old. Fantastic, evocative, surprising beer thick with sugar, coffee-accented roast and history.
