Had this in the City Hotel Dunfermline when it was first released which I believe was for Burns Day in 1995. Deep oak brown to black this had a rich yet perfectly balanced structure of rich roasty nuts, toffee and earth. Dense magnolia head. Beautiful.

UPDATED: FEB 2, 2013 Cask at the Southsider, Edinburgh. Vintage notes from January 1997. Digging out these old notes because this beer seems to be retired. No great loss. Sweet and malty. Minimal hop influence. Slightly sticky stuff. Didn’t like it at all. According to my notes it was 4.1% way back then for what its worth. 4/10 on my old scoring system. Made at the old Maclay brewery (long since gone) in Alloa back in those days of course. I’m not sure this one survived the transition to contract brewing at Belhaven.

Bottled. Ruby red with moderate head and condition. Aromas of malt and buttery hop. More roast malt in the mouth and a smokiness that wasnt apparent in the nose, finishing sweet and malty
