2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 TheRealMGD (356) - Lakewood, Washington, USA - SEP 20, 2011
Bottle at Hops & Crops. Dark red-brown pour with a brief tan head leaving heavy, coarse lace. Metallic nose (bottle may have sat). Medium body and carbonation. Heavy metallic taste overpowers a chocolate and toffee middle, followed by a medium, coffee and bitter finish. The metallic taste fades somewhat as the glass warms and the chocolate becomes more prominent as a hint of licorice enters. This is what I have for now, will try a fresh pour at Steamship when I’m there next and re-rate.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 jgb9348 (3367) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - SEP 6, 2011
Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, a touch of licorice, some light coffee and a bit more roasted malt and earth. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt flavours with a touch of sugars, cream and a little earthiness. Aftertaste shows the simple, yet potent roasted malt taste with a little sweetness and a hint of alcohol near the end. Overall, a decent beer that shows some quality, but not great compared to other artisinal beers in New Zealand. I sampled this 33cL bottle with ridges on the lip, on my honeymoon on 22-August-2011 at the Koru Club (Air New Zealand) in Auckland International Airport.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 maneliquor (1005) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JUN 17, 2011
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Quite fond of this beer. Nothing special. Shows lots of roasted malts and light bitter coffee but a fantastic dark quaffer
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 EdKing (761) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAR 16, 2011
Dark in colour, almost black with browny tinges. Light in the mouth, more like a porter or German black beer /schwarzbier. Nice roasted flavours with coffee high notes and chocolate on the finish. Only criticism is bit too light in body and thin in the mouth.
5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 summervillains (3) - Massachusetts, USA - FEB 18, 2011 does not count
Got a chance to drink this when in the Marshall Islands. I love this beer. Unique... dark but not heavy. Incredibly complex but incredibly drinkable. I snuck 6 or 7 of these back to the States and am drinking them slowly and rarely only on very special occasions. Wish I could get it here.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 GT2 (3420) - Washington DC, USA - NOV 24, 2010
330mL awesome bottle as always. Pour is a clear, cola brown with a thin, tan head with very little retention. Aroma is strong milk chocolate, rich caramel, burnt caramel, cookie dough, toast. Taste is sessionable, rich dark malts, cola sweetness, slightly bitter. Fresh, lively, bitter on the palate. Very well made and easily enjoyable.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 mkel07 (1553) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - OCT 15, 2010
330ml bottle. Jet black in colour with a coffee coloured head of tiny bubbles. Looks thick and heary, a meal in a glass. Burnt smoky aroma leads to as burnt malt taste that lingers and the flavour spreads to all parts of the mouth.
