COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mac's Copperhop Ale is an India Pale Ale style beer, whose name is derived from the five hop varieties, an unusually high number. The Nelson-based brewery has chosen hops from the Nelson region, which are added at selected times late in the boil to create a distinctive hoppy flavour. With the autumnal character of Mac's Copperhop Ale, a ploughman's lunch of fresh bread, cheddar cheese, cured meats, pickled onions, Branston Pickle and salad greens is a perfect complement.

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2005 (Bottle 33,5 cl) Extremely beautiful, dark amber coloured, filtered with a big, creamy off-white head leaving laces on the glass. Nice hoppy nose. Nutty aroma but not much body. In spite of no less than five, locally grown hops this beer is not very bitter. And then again - a deep sigh - this typical Macs bon-bon tang. Is it the house yeast?? Nah, it’s both in top- and bottom fermenting beers. It’s really sad and destroying for beers that have a much greater potential. 170305

Draught at Smuggler’s, Nelson. Clear amber appearance. Fruity vegetable aroma with some soapy mangoes thrown in. Clean, sharp mouthfeel with strong compost heap flavours and some fatty off-flavours. Unpleasant resiny finish. Hardly drinkable.

Bottled: Light amber coloured. Beige lasting dense head. Hoppy and floral aroma. Smooth flavour dominated by hops. But its not an overwhelming hopsflavour, its vary vague and not what I would expect from a IPA. Very light bitterness in the end. Easy drinkable, but by far not the best IPA.

330 ml bottle. Orange-copper coloured beer with a thin white head. Arom ais slightly malty with fruity and juicy hops (mango, papaya, juicy fruit). A touch of spiciness. The hops mingle perfectly with the sweet bready caramel malts. Flavour is semi-sweet with plenty of juicy hop flavour and moderate bitterness. Not like any IPA I’ve had before, but still very good.

Clear copper, small head. Loads of floral hops on the nose and palate, a little spice, all balanced with some caramel malt on the palate and a nice dry finish. Very nice.

Copper colour with lasting white head and good lacing. Light citrus and floral hop aroma. Good initial flavour of hops but no support to carry it through, so it falls over at the end. This could be a good beer but unfortunately for me at the moment it is just a thirst quencher.

Another one from memory, but worthy of it. Was an impressive melding of malt and hops from one of the mainstream breweries - something they haven’t recaptured to the same degree of late. A shame it is no longer being brewed.

Poured clear copper with a large off white head. Ok retention due to medium-high carbonation. Hops dominate aroma, some very citric (cascade?) in style. Smooth medium-thin body. Flavour overall is hoppy, but bland. Refreshing, but nothing stands out.
