3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Sampled on Flashyís tour of LA, New Zealand and Hong Kong of September/October 2007 - This is an interesting and good effort at a German Pilsner from Macís. Hoppy, citrusy and bitter - a spirited effort and very drinkable.

3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: OCT 31, 2007 Really impressive due to the awesome hop treatment that leaves such a strong impression right through the palate. Big herbal / nettle hit early followed up with a grainy, wheat-like character. The obvious peer is the Wanaka Brewski but I think this is a better beer.
Sept 2007 (3.1)
Massive white fizzy head settles quickly. Light golden amber on colour, quite boring actually. Herbal nose with cut grass, pongy, faint spices with tropical fruit and faint passionfruit. Palate and flavours had mixed results. More herbal notes with sweetish fruits but I could also pick a íoffí flavour of stale bread. Iím probably being a bit harsh given it was so faint but just enough to distract me. Notwithstanding a fairly tidy drop.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Another of the light, fruity pilseners that the Kiwis do so well. Itís certainly not as "big" as the name suggests - more of a crooner than a rocker. Lucid gold with a dollop of foam. Classic NZ tropical fruit aroma - bit soapy, bit green, with strong passionfruit and gooseberry. Couldnít smell the crystal malt, which Iíd take as a positive with this style. Soft mouthfeel. Lovely restrained tropical fruit flavours, with the hops working in harmony with the malts, rather than competing for attention. Perhaps a little crude and grainy but redeemed by those lovely NZ hops. Moderate bitterness for a bright, refreshing finish. This is very sessionable and perfect summer drinking. The best of the few Macs Iíve had to date but that may change with a trip to NZ in a month or two. I liked this a lot. (330ml bottle from Vintage Cellars, Clovelly. BB 1/2/08)

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured a very pale hue, aroma was light but, in a way, intense hop character. Thin but flavoursom body. Finish was very dry, leaving an almost grapey flavour followed by a strong refreshing bitterness. I love these Sauvin hops.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Another one of these guys with the pulltop lids. Aroma is packed full of hops reminisant of kiwi fruit, passionfruit and citrus zesty. Pours a slightly hazy looking pale gold body with white head. Body is full and has some underlying grainy pale malt flavours to support the hop tang and bitterness apparent on the nose. Finishes with a nice citrus tang, with a bit of sweetness about it. This is quite a nice and interesting take on a pilsener.

As much Iíd love to knock Macs (as one of the big big boys in NZ), I found the Hop Rocker to be rather decent. It is simple, and not overly fruity, but a nice crisp clean pilsner none-the-less.

Very pleasant light NZ pils. I love this style, when the hops are not over done, as is the case here, you have the perfect beer for pairing with almost any takeaway food you can imagine. Just enough of a hint of NZ saaz to keep things interesting, really refreshing, really pleasant.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Why is this called a pale lager when the bottle says it is a pilsner? Very pale colour ans light creamy head but the nose is not as assertive as some say. There is a degree of NS hops but this is not a common hop at the moment so I canít be definitive about how it impacts upon the beer. The flavour and mouthfeel is quite thin and sharp with too much carbonation. Just an average beer.
