3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Gentle wafts of hay and orange come from a perfect golden lager with a frothy, lingering head. Surprisingly complex in the mouth, biscuity malt is rolled over by a bit of tart, rough hop flavour. Lingering bitter aftertaste.
Quite nice, and a lot better than I expected from one of New Zealand’s unimaginative big commercial brewers. But through one reason or another (the brewery having to relocate due to the Christchurch earthquake? A desire to challenge the growing craft market on their own terms?). Whatever the reason, this is a very full and flavoursome New Zealand Pilsner style - not as hopped as some, and the malt is bettered by others, but as a middle-of-the-road, hot summer’s afternoon sort of pilsner, this does well.

1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Thin bright white head of fine bubbles. Skunks ass in the aroma. Seems like it is loaded with saaz hops. I can already feel the headache coming on. Some light lemon and rice in the aroma too. Color is a clear gold with almost no carbonation. Light cereal grains, lemongrass and straw in the flavor. Significant lingering bitter with very little body. Not a beer i would recommend. Not my cup of tea!

2.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
Tasted 8/2/2014. BB 23/08/14. Poured a clear golden colour with a one-finger white bubbly head that diminished quickly to a collar that laced very poorly. Carbonation low with medium sized bubbles. Aroma of clean fresh sweet malt with passionfruit and maybe other tropical fruits. Taste is clean with slightly fruity sweetness and very slight bitterness. Light body. OK but does not distinguish itself from any other pilsner.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottled. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma is a bit flowery. Pale, golden coloured beer with a white head. The taste is a bit malty (more than average dutch pilseners), light citric hoppy. Good thirst quencher.

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
From draft. Clear gold, effervescent with a small white head. Medium body, dry, tart, vitamin-like and husky with a sourish grain flavor that grows unbearable after only a few sniffs and sips. Plant matter, leaves, vegetable bitterness, coming across as over-hopped due to the horribly astringent malt. Add to that coarse seltzer water carbonation and suggestions of burnt popcorn, it’s difficult to find anything to like about this beer.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pilsener not only on the name, but on looks, aroma and taste. In spite of the mentioned NZ hops, I get the sensation of Saaz, with grass, citrus, metallic bitterness. Nice.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: OCT 26, 2013 568ml bottle. A clear, bright golden amber in colour with a small, creamy and somewhat lasting white head. Grassy, citric hops with good lemon freshness, a subtle yeast and grain component and a gentle biscuit malt sweetness particularly on the mid-palate. Light to medium body, firm and clean palate texture with medium effervescence and a moderate intensity bitterness in the finish. Well balanced, clean and refreshing.

Stands out among NZ macro brews for reasonable strength of flavour. Hop notes make this more refreshing than most lagers. Very drinkable and fantastic value.

A good beer, leaves a bittersweet after taste and has an amber colour to it.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Great session beer - on top in NZ there is no peer for a commercial/macro brew.
In bottle - it is a bit hit or miss depending on freshness and I think also simply over the itme I have been drinking it (not having a chance to drink this on tap in a while).
I loved this back in 2004/5 when I first saw it - drank my body weight of it in Wellington... but fast-forward a few years, and it doesnt seem to be quite as "rocking". Not bad, but I feel they have taken the hops off a bit from those days - or I have moved on to larger IPAs and perhaps need a bit more to be wowed.
Anyway, for a session beer I still like it - enough so that I made it one of my beers on offer at my wedding... so I would call that a decent recommendation.

2.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
from memory, had 18/02/2013. mild hops with very ’subtle’ fruitiness over what seems to be a fairly typical mainstream lager to me. awfully refreshing to be sure, and a fair bit better than, say, mac’s gold, but still pretty bland.
