It has a strange malty aroma I have never smelled with any other beer. It pours nice making a dark creamy head. Too bad it doesn’t last very long. It starts out smooth with a very slight bitter taste but I like the way it finishes leaving a nice roasted flavor a full 30 seconds after the beer is swallowed.

Low-medium effervescence but perhaps still too much fizz and foaming for a beer that claims to be incomparably ’smooth’. Dark coffee and lactic flavors. Plenty of hop and wet, mineral flavors. I’d really like to taste this on tap sometime. I bet it’s much better. MacTarnahan’s is one of my favorite macro micros.

Very Good

UPDATED: FEB 1, 2003 The beer pours that magical color to me, black with hints of garnet, the head prodigious in size, the texture frothy, the color light chocolate. After the head erodes it leaves a thick glutinous sheet to seal off the glass. The nose is lightly toasted malt, sweet, as is the start, top skimpy, finish has a nice hop presence, carbonation light, the aftertaste dry and lingering. Drinkable as porters go, maybe a beginner’s dark beer, but lacks any real interest for me, as it has little body and little bite.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 THE BEER BARON (275) - Wisconsin, USA - SEP 11, 2001
Another great beer from Portland Brewing. Not as strong as the average Porter, but I think that made it easier to drink alot more of this.

The aroma is a little weak, as is the aftertaste. But overall, I thought it was pretty good.

Big, foaming, solid head is this beer’s best feature. Roasted coffee-bean aroma. Bitter-chocolate flavor is a bit...tired, for lack of a better word. Too hoppy at the end. Bit light in the body. An inoffensive porter, that just isn’t enough to make me buy it again.

Needed alittle more complexity to be excellent. A good introduction to stouts/porters.

very dark, few head, black chocolate aroma, not very malty, roasted with a bitter finish

Nice creamy texture but flavor is a little thin for style. It does have a good smoky flavor as expected. All in all pretty good.
