Once again MacTarnahan's redefines "smooth". Striking a perfect balance between the classic Northwest and Celtic styles, Blackwatch is a remarkably distintive new style of porter. Color pours a dark brownish black, settles to a very opaque black, no head was produced but some residual tannish bubbles arrived around the edges and has some small stringy patches of lace. Aroma is blackened malts and very roasty burnt-like, slightly robust and earthy like wet soil, with a nice deep coffeeish/espresso backing thats all pretty soft but not in a light aspect. Taste is mildly robust and smooth of deeply roasted-blackened malts, good sweetish tangy bitterness with a slight hop twinge and dryness. Gets a bit of espresso taste and feel quality in there but nothing to potent. It could use a bit more oompff, its pretty mellow, smooth, and easy. Just enough flavor and tangyness to keep me sippin'. Feel is a bit light, but close to medium body, smooth & pretty creamy and coats nicely with a light popcorn-like airy, partially tangy dryness on the top of the mouth and the tongue in the finish. Pretty decent porter, I wouldn't pass it up if offered.

Bottle. Pour a nice dark black with a thin brow head. Aroma is very nice on a cold night, roasty, little smokie, and hints of chocolate. Very creamy on the palate and swallows very smoothly and coats your entire mouth. Exceeded my expectations. Wonderful soft, yet very rich beer.

Out of a bottle, $6 for the 6-pack at Trader Joe’s. Nose of espresso and a bit of cream. Very smooth, with a strong coffee taste, and a bit of milk and cocoa. Finish is slightly bitter with a hint of sweetness, lingering on the palate. Great all-around brew, very easy-drinking but substantial. Could be a bit more full-bodied. however.

Pours smooth and dark. Bittersweet chocolate, and a light coffee aroma. Roasted maltiness with a medium bodied mouthfeel and a dry, bitter, slightly hoppy finish. Very smooth and easy drinking. Great porter.

Dark and black pour with a slight tan head. Aroma is pure roasted malt with a little sweet toffee smell. I got a good toasty malt flavor from every sip. Creamy body and thick enough to remember. A little bit dry at the end and a small amount of bitterness. I liked it as much on the first sip as I did at the last. This one is a keeper. One of the better porters I’ve tried to this point!

Just finished this one, my first ever cream porter. Colour was a VERY dark brown accompanied by a brown, small head plus ample carbonation. Aroma was a meld of coffee and roasted malt, as was the taste. A nice, unique beer.

Bottle. Pour black with a big tan head. Big nose of burnt malt and coffee and carmel. A touch of nuts comes through. Really great mouthfeel, and good to the last drop. This one really tastes rich. A winner.

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2006 Black with a medium tan head. Looks like a porter should. Smells like chocolate and coffee. Malty that with a sticky taste of chocolate, caramel, nuts and coffee. Not as roasted as other porters but rich and smooth. Definately creamy definately good.

Pours a deep, opaque brown with a thick, tan head. The aroma is very inviting. Hints of coffee and molasses and toffee. Rich, creamy mouth feel. Delicious flavor combines the aroma elements but not as sweet as one would expect. Quite a good drink.
