2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 mikey (504) - farmington, Utah, USA - OCT 30, 2009
Poured a nearly opaque black, no head to speak of. The nose is smokey with rich strong chocolate on the back end. The taste starts the same with a little of that same smokiness with chocolate and a hint of coffee. The end is malty and a little creamy. It’s a little thin for a porter,
slightly fizzy as well. It’s an okay porter. Won’t go out of my way for it though.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 hennes (934) - Fountain, Michigan, USA - OCT 25, 2001
A porter that struggles to get going. When it does, there’s a decent enough array of coffee and roastiness and a pleasant length of finish, but on the whole this is just small potatoes in the porter world. You can do much better.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 CaptainCougar (7093) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - APR 9, 2003
Dark brown color with tan head and roasted corn aroma. Cloyingly bitter burnt flavor. Body is thin for a porter. Finishes heavy on black malt with a touch of dark chocolate. This lacks any complexity. Tastes too much like burnt water, if there is such a thing.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 Marc (485) - Yokosuka, JAPAN - SEP 2, 2002
Self sustaining thin tan head, and a light coffee nose. Mouthfeel is thin for the style with some cold coffee notes and a touch of metal. A lot of carbonation for a porter.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 jgb9348 (3964) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - AUG 26, 2003
Dark brown colour, almost black with a ruby coloured tint when held directly to a light. A decently dense thick tan head forms and lasts for a bit, but not too long. Fairly light aroma, dominated (with what there is:) by chocolate, coffee and sweeter malts. Light-Medium-bodied; Chocolatey taste with some sweetness and vanilla creeping in the taste along with the ever present coffee-bitterness. The aftertaste is almost overwhelmed with the coffee, but very pleasantly, especially respectable for the style. Overall, better than what I was expecting from this brewery, and a pretty average Porter. I shared this 12 ounce bottle with good friend Jon (JonR888710) at the Brickskeller in Washington, D.C. on 26-August-2003.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 Tejas (800) - Dallas, Texas, USA - MAR 16, 2005
Nice creamy head. Too bad it didn’t last long. BIG roasty flavors at first then followed by some dry hop bitterness. I expected it to be creamier A tad more depth of flavor(fruit, chocolate, etc..) would be nice. Still not a bad porter but there’s far better out there that I’d reach for first. One & done.
2.8 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 bombshelter (349) - San Francisco, California, USA - MAY 5, 2005
bottle from brickskeller. aroma is a little roasty.
flavor: like a delicate coffee roast. a little sweet (sorta like a krispy kreme donut) in front, but finishes dominated by mellow roast and the perception that i’m eating a piece of overcooked toast. still pretty good, but weird.
2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 nick76 (4077) - Tampa, Florida, USA - APR 13, 2009
The aroma is very creamy with heavily toasted malt and coffee. There is also chocolate. The appearance is dark brown with a respectable head. The flavor is like the aroma with a bitter burnt finish. The palate is smooth but somewhat thin. Overall it has a lot of good qualities but just doesn’t taste as good as it could.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 MrChopin (2527) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - SEP 7, 2009
Black, no head. Syrup nose, woody, chocolate. Lots of cocoa in the flavor, more wood, grainy malt. Way too watery, short finish in cocoa and malt. Finish is reminiscent of chocolate milk. Pretty forgettable overall, except way too syrupy and sweet.
2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Vac (2445) - San Diego, California, USA - MAR 27, 2004
This porter pours with a black body topped by a thick tan head with a good amount of lacing. The aroma is bitter, coffeeeish and full of roasty notes with a slight sweetness underneath. The flavor is slightly sweet but mostly bitter and roasty with a slight coffee note. Reminds me of the taste cigarette smoke leaves in your mouth. Yuck! Medium to full bodied and relatively smooth.
