Light oaken aroma, with a wonderful copper appearance. Nice presence of hops, but malty body is slightly lacking in rich taste. Finishes with a refreshing crisp hoppy delight. A good beer – comparable with other West Coast IPAs.

’Matures in oak’ is a bit misleading--oak chips are added during maturation in the usual stainless tanks. Not as romantic, but the flavor’s still there. It’s the most interesting thing about this beer. It imparts a resinous bitter flavor. Interestingly, that same resinous quality offsets the hop flavor somewhat. The effect is like a near-miss art-house film: you appreciate it intellectually, but you don’t really ENJOY it. It’s a gorgeous beer, but as with all the brewery’s beers, hyper-filtration removes a lot of body. In an IPA, you miss that body.

English Style IPA. A little fruity and hoppy, true to style. Nice malt and hop balance.

Aroma is moderately light but complex, revealing in equal measure malts, hops and yeast. Color is a rich copper; head is moderate, but retention on the light side. Flavors come at you from several directions--malt is clearly in evidence but not overly so, and hops are featured throughout its transit over the palate...interesting fruity overtones. Carbonation is relatively restrained as well. Finish is medium dry with a reminder of its oak ageing. This takes a rather divergent tack from most American brewers of IPAs. It is well-hopped, to be sure, but showcases a rare complexity and layering of flavors that makes this a very distinctive and impressive offering.

Unique among American IPA’s... Not as hoppy as most, but as well balanced as any. Finish has a definate oak flavor.

Not as hoppy or spicy as I expected, but still a very well balanced IPA, lots of hops, nice quick aftertaste, a good IPA

Closer to an English IPA than other NW brews, it had a nice hoppy aroma and a nice little bite in the finish, and it looks a beautiful coppery color in the glass. Unquestionably quaffable in quantity(my old English comp teacher would appreciate the alliteration).

UPDATED: OCT 27, 2005 Hazy orange. Big & fruity, sweet-smelling aroma; slightly yeasty and a little musty; woody. More of an English-style IPA rather than your typical American-style. Interesting hops, but they’re way too subdued, IMO. Malty flavor is decent (cookie dough). Texture is a little watery at times, though. Decent balance, but bitterness was on the light side. This beer kind of tasted like a few Canadian beers (labelled as IPAs) I sampled while in Nova Scotia - yeasty and malty, with weakish hops. Not bad, though.

Wow! What a great beer! Bitter, but truly palatable. An IPA for both the beginner andthe pro drinker. Affordable, yet still stylish. I only bought a bottle of this, but will definately have a six for my next party. Bitter taste, yet still palatible, slight tinny tones, but clear brewed, I know little about the brewer, so someone please enlighten me. This was a great beer for me.... I have no complanints and liken it to the Ballantines IPA of old.
