3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle - pours cloudy brown with a tan head. Lots of sweetness upfront on the nose, cherry, liquorice, caramel malt and treacle. Initial taste is overpoweringly sweet and the sweetness lingers. Some dryness at the end but this is not enough to cut through the sweetness. Palate is creamy to oily with moderate carbonation.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
330mL bottle from Slowbeer.
Pours an thick opaque bronze body, holding a thick dense creamy beige head.
Have to let this one warm up to really appreciate its aroma - rich dark caramels & treacle, nutty biscuity malts, dried fruits, Christmas pudding spices, port & plummy esters.
Texture is thick, rich, warming - no quarms about it being over 11% it lets you know straight up but in a welcoming manner. Carbonation is low, creamy, almost velvety.
Immense palate, packed with all the good things - bread crust, dark brown sugar, raisins and sultanas and prunes and dried figs and glace fruits, nutmeg & cinnamon, black peppery phenolics, dark plum skin esters, Port undertones & Brandy warmth. Drying spicy finish, lingers long, warms, soothes, comforts.
Truth be told, it’s a bloody hot day here today (and Christmas tends to be in the middle of Summer down here), and perhaps if it were colder this would be more suiting, but it’s still a fantastic rich Belgian-style ale.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle from Archive Beer Boutique September 2013. Swirling off white foam above a light brown coloured beer. Nice aroma of spiced fruit with a flavour to match.

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Muddy light brown. Lightly herbal nose that also hints at a lot of malt sweetness. Very sweet with lots of alcohol. Light spice and heavy-handed yeastiness. Nice lacing. Overall a bit of a work in progress.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
(Bottle) Not the prettiest of beers - it’s cloudy dark brown with a rather thin tan head. Very nice aroma however - rich and complex, with raisins, caramel and alcohol. Probably the fullest bodied beer I have tried; it is syrupy, and somehow couples this with lively frothy carbonation in the mouth. On first taste it struck me as much too sweet. After several mouthfulls I seem to have adjusted. This is a very rich beer with quite a lot going on. The foretaste has a nice attack of spice, alcohol, dried fruit notes. This mellows to an over sweet dark toffee mid palate. Alcohol and black coffee bitterness develop to balance the sweetness into a long sticky finish. An unusual beer, pushing the boundaries. Very enjoyable, but certainly not a beer for everyday drinking - but probably more than once a year on Christmas Day.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
330ml bottle from Beer Cartel into a tulip glass. Deep murky brown colour. Huge creamy head for a quad (especially for a 11.3% beer!) that lasts for a good 5 min. Aroma is toffee, molasses, dates, plums, spices, yeast, alcohol. Hitting all the right notes for a quad so far. Taste is caramel, dark fruits, chocolate, cherries, spices, light dryness rather than bitterness in the finish. Quite full-bodied and nice slick oily mouthfeel, with a little pepperiness. Only complaint is that it's possibly a bit too sweet (and I like sweet beers) but easily the best Australian beer I've had and can respectably stand alongside international benchmarks of the quadrupel style.

4.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
This is an incredibly good beer.
Pours a dark amber with a dense head that lasts throughout. Notes of caramel and spice. Well hidden alcohol (11.3% coincidence that this is the same as Rochefort 10?).
Might be the best beer brewed in Australia!
